Current advancements in technology have brought about innovations that have made communication with people oversees to be just by a click of a button. This is done through various social media such as Facebook, MySpace, Instagram, Twitter, Yahoo and Google+ that allow interaction. People can take photos and videos of their day to day life experiences and share them with the rest of the world by uploading them onto these social websites. As such, the world has been converted into a global village where most information is just a click of a button away (Sturm, 2012). Social networking is an issue that has sparked debates all over the world. The introduction of social media has indeed changed the world in many aspects. Today, a significant portion of literate people in the society has at least engaged in social networking (Sturm, 2012). This engagement and interaction on social media has affected people in one way or the other. It is this effect of social networking on people who indulge in it that has since been a bone of contention dating back to the 1980s when internet first came into being. The impacts of social media on individual people have been substantial. In some instances, these impacts have been so significant that they change the lifestyles of some users (Lenhart, Purcell, Smith & Zickur, 2010). People are seen to change their perception of some aspects of life after indulging so much in social networking. Since these changes can be either positive or negative, the good and bad of social networking remains an issue that will forever stir debates across the world. In conclusion, various studies across the world have shown that people are equally divided on whether social media should be shut down or encouraged to operate. As such, the issue of whether social networking is good or bad remains a matter of contention. The conceptualization of social media was driven by the goal of enhancing communication among friends and families hence making the world a better place. However, somewhere down the line, it appears that the privileges of social networking have been abused. This has portrayed social networking as not such a good thing. Nevertheless, despite all these challenges, I strongly feel it is a necessary evil. How would the world be without easy communication made possible by social media?
