Former Stanford University student, Evan Spiegel launched Snapchat in September of 2011, hoping to encourage users to share the frivolous, imperfect moments of life with friends. In his words, he explained why he created the sensational app, “Snapchat isn’t about capturing traditional Kodak moments. It’s about communicating with the full range of human emotion-not just what appears to be pretty or perfect,” (Luckett and Casey 40). Snapchat is a mobile application available for Android and iOS devices, that can be utilized to capture and share images or videos with friends. With more than 158 million daily active users, the social app averages a number of 2.5 billion snapchats sent in a day (Smith). A dilemma encountered in many social networks today is the trail of a digital footprint. The relatively permanent digital footprint is a trace of what an internet user leaves behind which in the long run can negatively affect anyone from getting admitted to a university to getting hired by a company. A feature exclusive to the app, such as the varying time limit gives users access to an image or video for a maximum of ten seconds before self-destructing, promoting users to snap a comical selfie. Any fears over privacy are forgotten as snaps are instantly destroyed or only available for 24 hours if added to a story.
