There were many similarities between the Roman and Carthaginian empires. Geographically Carthage and Rome are located on the opposite side of the Mediterranean Sea. The two cities were well-known for their power, strength in the western Mediterranean and Italian Peninsula, and war. The first one led by Carthaginian power and the other one by Roman power. In this essay it will be explained how Carthage became almost the equal of Rome.

Carthage was a city founded by Queen Elissa around the year of 813 BC. It was originally settled by the Tyre and Phoenicians and located on the northern part of Africa (Morey, 1901). Its strategically position allowed traders to stop to repair their ships and re-supply, this allowed Carthage to become a powerful city in the Mediterranean Sea (Morey, 1901). …show more content…

Carthage was not only achieving power in the Mediterranean, but it was also gaining dominion of Spain and its peninsula (Morey, 1901). At the same time, Rome was adding to their long streak of conquest the conquest of Cisalpine Gaul.

This expansion from the Cartage side alarmed Rome and its growth was too fast. The Romans offer a treaty to Carthage to stop conquering more territories beyond the river Iberus, in the northern of Spain (Morey, 1901). The Carthaginians agreed with the Romans and with ambition kept conquering southern part of Spain. Upon the death of Hasdrubal, Hannibal was named as commander of the City (Morey, 1901).
