Look around and observe how much technology is in the surrounding area. Chances are there is at least a couple of electronics. Welcome to the age of technology. Technology is used on a daily basis. Students spend hours using technology for school. More than likely they spend hours using technology for purposes other than school. They are constantly using technology yet many schools are not allowing them to use technology in the classroom. The question of whether or not technology should be allowed in the classroom has been debated on ever since technology has become more mobile. The advantages outweigh the disadvantages. They are a necessity for students to learn but there is an alternative that is just as effective. E-books are the best substitute for textbooks. They contain the same information as the texts books but they are available electronically. Allowing students to have access to a laptop, tablet, etc. in the classroom makes it possible for e-books to be used. Lori Williamson is a librarian at the Victoria College/University of Houston-Victoria Library. She estimates that textbooks for 12 credit hours could cost a student about 780 dollars (Astrain). It is not secret that students pay hundreds even thousands of dollars a semester for textbooks they may never open. E-books cost less and some are free. Gino Tozzi is a political science lecturer at Victoria College/University of Houston. His students used to pay between 99 and 112 dollars for his textbooks. He started offering them free as e-books in 2014 (Astrain). Not only are they more affordable but they are less tolling on the students back. Textbooks can be insanely heavy. My parents weighed my backpack in fifth grade and it was over fifty pounds. Having e-books require students to carry electronic devices that weigh less than ten pounds. Removing the extra weight can help reduce back pain and prevent problems in the future. We all have to learn to take responsibility for our actions and face the consequences. Technology in the classroom encourages students to make decisions for themselves. A report from 2004 showed that young people had spent an extra hour a day on technology. The amount has risen from five years prior to the report (Joyce Howard). The numbers have only gotten higher since then. Common Sense Media conducted a study that discovered children ages 10 to 12 are spending around six hours on technology for entertainment purposes (Matthew and TODAY USA). This is how they choose to spend their time. No one is making them use technology they chose to. Having a laptop in front of them might be tempting to avoid doing their classwork. They will either choose to browse the web instead of doing their schoolwork or they will finish their school work and use the electronic device after school, the decision is up to them. Getting caught using a laptop or tablet for non-school related activities might get the student a detention. They made the choice and now they must suffer the consequences. A detention, warning, or call home to their parents is usually reserved for the kids in grade school. Typically high school and college students get a punishment far worse than a teacher informing their parents of their disobedience.
