Should School Uniforms Be Worn

Has anyone ever been harassed in school or ever get into fights because of what they wear to school? There is an argument amongst students, faculty, and parents about whether or not the lack of school uniforms creates a hostile or unnecessary competitiveness between students. Let’s look deeper. If school uniforms were mandatory, perhaps there wouldn’t be so much violence. In my opinion, school uniforms are not really as bad as everybody seems to think. Uniforms make it easier for parents and/or teachers by decrease bullying, help to support good school spirit, and save parents money. Just based on income alone, parents who live check to check do not have the income to keep up with fashion trends that youth sometimes feel the need to have. Parents generally spend an average of $44 per month on infant and toddler clothes and $78 a month on teen clothing. This is money that parents can save for vacation, use for food or other household needs, or use for savings.

On the flip side, some parents might not support the idea of their kids wearing the same clothes or same outfits every day and/or week. Parents may want their children to express their own individuality, which is something that they do through fashion. Studies have shown that mandatory uniforms helps youth focus better on learning rather than fashion trends. Before parents sign their kids up for a certain school, they might make a comparison by looking at students overall academic achievements to see how schools who have implemented dress codes are doing compared to those who do not have a mandatory dress code. We might be surprised at the outcome. Studying youth behaviors to see if it makes a difference in focus and achievement can assist in determining if a child should attend a particular school or
