The 21st century is a time of progress, with technology and financial security becoming increasingly integral to our lives. In addition, people also need more money to support a progressively larger global economy. The increase in population and manual labor jobs are becoming less relevant with the rise of technology. As a result, people need to work in more specialized fields in order to help humanity progress further and help sustain the economy. But, how do people work towards finding jobs in these specialized fields, and where can people find the skills they need to make this world a better place? It is a well-known fact that 4-year college graduates, on average, earn better salaries than high school graduates and those with associate’s degrees. According to the Federal Reserve of New York, a bank that plays an important role in the national economy, there is a $30,000 difference between the annual wages of a 4-year college graduate and a high school graduate. Life after graduation is easier for college graduates in regards to economic stability, because of their increased earning. Furthermore, the Federal Reserve also states there is a $20,000 difference between a college graduate and a person with an associate’s degree.(Do the Benefits of College Still Outweigh the Costs?, Page 2). We can see the importance of having a full bachelor’s degree than an associate degree because of the surprising disparity between the average wages. More evidence from the Federal Reserve of New York shows that four-year college graduates receive better lifetime returns, meaning their wages increase at a constant rate without sudden drops in their salary. The pay of college graduates increases by 30% over 25 years of their career, whereas an associate’s graduate only increases by 15% in the same amount of time. According to MyCollegeGuide.org, Molly Goldberg, a student at Florida State University, says, “I like to review my class material every day for about an hour just so all the information stays fresh and I’m not lost the next time I have to sit in the lecture hall. I’ve had to become very self-motivated in order to do well in my classes and have had to give up quite a few fun activities to secure good grades.” We can see that college life teaches students how to manage their time with many activities and the need set their priorities straight in order to be successful. Tyler Schaub, a student at the University of Iowa, talks about studying and working until 2 a.m. in the morning. He says, “Professors sometimes think that they are the only class giving homework. Sometimes I’ll have two exams, problems and a paper due in a two-day period!” Tyler’s account of college life demonstrates students have to learn to burn the midnight oil and schedule their tasks in order to meet their deadlines and therefore, be successful.
