Is plagiarism worth the risk of being known as the student with no academic honesty? Meaning when a student enters a room the teacher is automatically focusing on that students assignments because the student is known for cheating or plagiarizing. Plagiarism is the action of copying others’ work that is not your own and saying it is. Plagiarism can be likened to the example of Dylan stealing Brads valentines card, and giving it to Sally. The most prominent instances of plagiarism that occur is when a student is limited to a certain amount of time, and waits till the last minute to complete an assignment in order to receive a decent grade. In other words, “Self-plagiarism is the use of one’s own previous work in another context without citing that is used previously”. (WriterCheck) An example of self plagiarism is if Sandra wrote an essay her freshman year, and decided to send the same essay to her senior year English teacher. The U.S Department of Health and Human Services states, “The writer must study this matter carefully before reproducing any of this kind of work”. (WriterCheck) Self plagiarism occurs when a student is lazy or begins to procrastinate. Procrastination is when someone waits till the last minute to do a specific duty, despite being given a good amount of time to do the work. Any type of plagiarism that is used can lead to suspension, firing, or expulsion. Research discusses the consequences of plagiarism by stating, “The consequences of plagiarism could seriously endanger your academic career because your record will follow you: should you be compelled to leave your course of study, you will find it extremely difficult to obtain a place elsewhere because no college or university will want a student who has proven themselves to be dishonest and unworthy”.(ScanMyEssay) These consequences become negatively impacted on your life, especially when trying to find a job or applying to a university. As risky as plagiarizing is, “students today are faced not only with increasing pressure and a consequent temptation to plagiarise, but also with the potential to plagiarise”. (ScanMyEssay) The internet plays a big part of plagiarism, because it has the information about everything. Students should avoid plagiarizing, rather than continue committing this action. There are many different ways to avoid plagiarizing, such as “paraphrasing, citing, and referencing”.(WriteCheck) By doing one of these steps to avoid the risk of plagiarism can help the flow of your assignment.
