Our education system fails the upcoming generation by not addressing sexual assault enough to them at a young age. If colleges are a “hunting ground” for sexual predators, advocates say that high schools are the breeding ground, and that any solution must start earlier. Parent’s hold the same responsibility to teach their kids about sexual assault. Sexual assault is a growing issue that continues to be normalized in our society and is seen as an uncomfortable topic to discuss between teachers and students and parents and their children. It has only been as of recent that men and women have begun to speak out about it and take this issue seriously. One in five women and one in 71 men will be raped in their lifetime. Teens are less likely to try things if they know more about it. A preemptive discussion is much better and much healthier than a reactive one. The discussion about this should not be one where the environment seems tense. No one has a clear mind in the heat of a moment. An open conversation between families when it’s calm and welcoming is the best way to really address the topic. An issue that is constantly occurring is that parents are not involved enough with schools and schools are not reaching out to parents enough. When parents are involved in their children's education, children succeed at higher rates. Analysis from the National Center for Families and Community Connections with Schools concluded that when schools and parents work together, students earn higher grades, perform better on tests, enroll in more advanced courses and more often graduate and continue onto post-secondary education (Burdett). So, how can schools and parents work together in protecting the children in their community? Meetings with teachers should be a regular occurrence throughout the school year where topics like preventing sexual assault and to raise awareness of the issue should be discussed.
