Self-Analysis Assignment

For this self-analysis assignment, I chose the assessment tools that addressed the skills approach, the behavioral approach and transformational style of a leader, which I perceived to be significant in shaping my leadership style. These tools will provide significant insight to my primarily leadership style as well as the component areas of leadership improvement.

The first leader assessment focused on distinguishing the various skills of my leadership type, specifically concerning technical, human and conceptual skill. This was important to assess and it increases self-awareness and can be adjusted easily through conscience practice and efforts. This competency assessment centered around task behavior and relationship behaviors. Task behaviors are those that aide in accomplishing goals and helping followers and other group members achieve goal and objectives. (Northouse & SAGE, 2016, p.71). Relationship behaviors are behaviors that help followers feel more secure and comfortable with themselves and others in the work environment (Northouse & SAGE, 2016, p. 71). On this assessment, my technical score of 46 was only one point higher than my relationship score of 45. Thus, these two aspects are almost equal in my leadership style. I am more likely to lead with emphasis on tasks rather than relationship, but still able to have the significance of relationships within my leading. I believe the assessment is accurate its scoring, as I like to provide more structure and direction to my followers, by organizing their work and giving them definitive responsibilities and instructions. However, I also consider myself to be a warm leader who can motivating and encourage followers while also building up confidence and trust. It is important for a leader to be able to have a balance of both technical and relationship skill. As a primarily introverted person, I shy away from extraversion which can deter my people and communication skills. While I do not lack interpersonal and social (people) skills, these areas to consider for improvement. To be an effective leader, one must be able to communicate well within small and large groups. An effective leader must have effective social judgement skills. While I do not lack self-confidence or the other traits that are needed for great leaders, I do realize the need to enhance my communication skills significantly to become a greater leader. Ways to enhance and develop my communication and social skills as leader are to be more self-aware, to know and understand different audiences and their communication needs, to be clear and specific in communication efforts, and interpret body language. To be self- aware is to recognize and understand one’s beliefs, values, strength and weaknesses. By knowing and understanding my areas of needed improvement, I am becoming more self-aware and I can progress in the areas of weaknesses. Self-aware also means being in tune with surrounding and being able to analyze and understand my part in different situations. Additionally, being able to adjust and adapt communication to different audiences helps to increase effective communication, as deliver multiple messages allow for more communication efforts.
