Recommended: Life is a struggle

Seabiscuit is a movie about struggles, grief and second chances. The movie begins with a teenager that is great with horses. His wealthy parents give him up for someone else when the great depression struck. Leaving him angry at the world and become a drunk and a fighter. On another part of the story, a man starts a business on repairing bikes when he left from a company that assembles bikes. One day, a man arrives with a broken car, he asks if the man, Howard, could fix his car. Howard begins to take apart the car and reassemble it, making it better. It was then that he got the idea of assembling and selling cars. When he had a family and a son, he teaches him how to drive. The son drove off, got hit by a car and died. This left a scar on him. Howard takes a risk and buys a horse that is seen as a failure. When he looks around, he sees a boy that is disturbed as much as the horse and hires him as a jockey. That was when seabiscuit started winning. When Howard became confident, he wanted a one on one race with the Admiral, a race horse of a millionaire from the East.Seabiscuit wins …show more content…

The people who were brought down by the stock market crash, loss of jobs and separation of families found something that they can connect to. The story of Seabiscuit, a horse that was against the odds and who has been through alot. Not only the horse, they also connected to the jockey, who experienced financial and family hardships during the great depression. When seabiscuit won, they felt like a part of them was winning too. Life can have its own struggles but everyone should keep going. Following his or her dreams and working toward it. Everyone should take a chance at every given opportunity and sometimes themselves or others a second chance. Facing some of the most challenging obstacles, both literally and figuratively, Braddock always found a way to weather the storm and wind up on top. This is due to his determination which is exemplified in the following quote; “I have to believe that when things are bad I can change them.” This quote is a testament to the working ethic of Braddock and his determination to make sure that both him and his family turn out O.K. Another quote which speaks to Braddock overcoming adversary explains how he doesn’t take this opportunity for granted. “You think you're telling me something? Like, what, boxing is dangerous, something like that? You don't think working triple shifts and at night on a scaffold isn't just as likely to get a man killed? What about all those guys who died last week living in cardboard shacks to save on rent money just to feed their family, 'cause guys like you have not quite figured out a way yet to make money off of watching that guy die? But in my profession - and it is my profession - I'm a little more fortunate.” This quote explains how he understands the magnitude of his comeback and that he is embracing it. Another theme which is prominent in Cinderella Man is the trying times of the Great Depression. The Depression leaves a giant footprint on the entire film, dictating the entire storyline. A large segment of the film is shot in flashbacks focusing on the past of Ali Pointe. Pointe was a ruffian with theft and drugs on his record; he joined the militants to assist in getting rid of the problems in Algeria associated with the French. With the flashbacks the film tells the struggles of the insurgents and the persistence of the French to end the war. It shows the transformation of the insurgency into a full out revolution. When the flashbacks ends and it is now present time Ali Pointe, along with the rest of the FLN leaders captured are beheaded. Through this, the FLN reciprocate and the insurgency becomes a full on national revolution with growth in numbers and support. The film ends with Algeria gaining the independence it strived for in 1962. The film is important in understanding asymmetric conflicts because despite being the weaker side, Algeria had proved itself to be much stronger than the French and had its newfound independence to show for it.

Likewise, if countries didn’t have their own identity, what would make them different? The film Braveheart showed the strive Scotland had to form their own national identity. However, films that are fictionalized have many effects. Fictionalized films focusing on national identity can act as a demagoguery and cause political movements. Even though the film Braveheart provides a good example of cultural pride and the strive for national identity, it does not accurately portray the Scottish rebellion of England; moreover, many historical films don’t accurately portray historical events.
