School Board Meeting Reflection

At my field placement’s school board meeting there were many issues that were discussed. The topic that was discussed was the functioning of the school day. During this discussion, the principal stated that the teachers and faculty were doing a great job in the mornings with getting the students from the buses to their proper classrooms. It was at this point that a teacher presented the idea of rotating teachers and faculty members outside each morning in order to maintain the morning drop offs. This idea was also proposed in order to create a schedule for all faculty to go by instead of randomly choosing faculty members to stand outside every morning. This discussion concluded with an unanimous vote for the proposal. Another topic that was discussed at the school board meeting was how nutritious the school lunches are. Many school board members were apprehensive that even though the school lunches were providing an adequate amount of daily vitamin and minerals, they should not be deemed healthy. Board members voiced their concerns about future cuts to extracurricular activities in order to emphasize core standards. By cutting the extracurricular activities the school (and school district) would be saving a great deal of money. The school administration also discussed that if the extracurricular activities were to be cut, that it would help to improve standardized test scores by providing more materials to the teachers and faculty. The school board members decided to measure how much profit they are getting from extracurricular activities and how well they did on previous standardized tests in order to make any other decisions.
