I chose, “Satan Takes the Word Away.” This one really hit home for two reasons. First, I had no idea of what the subject matter was about and second, I am easily distracted. The central theme of this sermon is how Satan distracts us from the word of God and how we can counterattack Satan.
Satan distracts us from the work of God primarily in three ways. Satan uses strategy, as an example he starts on Saturday night by keeping us up late and in doing so, we are less attentive during Sunday service. Not only are we less attentive, he surrounds us with distractions within the service, such as perfume, other’s appearance, tomorrows agenda, etc. He attempts to keep our minds filled with other topics. First, prepare the soil – it is crucial to start this early Saturday night. Set aside time for prayer and meditation. In doing so, this will prepare your mind and heart for God’s word, allowing you to get ready for Sunday’s worship. Also, if your ritual is to read the Sunday paper prior to attending service, do not let the paper set your agenda for the day. One’s prayer should plea for God’s intervention, be conscientious in the preparing of the soil of your heart. Second, listen and concentrate with all your might to the word of God. The word of God is in the hymns, the organ, prayers, and anthems. Unfortunately, we as sinners find it hard to listen to the word of God. You need to come to church to hear, listen, and focus your mind. If one is not prepared and ready for the word of God it will go in one ear and out the other, the word of God will be lost. The idea of preparing the night before attending church, is an excellent idea. The world is full of distractions and if you begin to set those distractions aside and focus on the word of God, you will be enriched with glory. I also never gave it a thought about the message one is receiving from reading the paper. Pray the paper, for the outcome of the articles to be positive. I have said many times, “I wish the paper would print more of the good things people are doing”, but they usually do not. Lastly and one that I fall victim to is the music. I recently started attending a different church and I am struggling with the music. I am focusing on the tone being monotone and knowing how I enjoyed and liked the music of my old church. It is evident that I am not focusing on the word of God.
Two things for me to focus on, preparing the night before and let my dislike for the music go. I have never prepared myself the night before and truly feel this will make a remarkable difference in my absorbing the word of God. I also need to pray and ask God to help me to focus more positively on the
