A complexity of the information you hear or conceive on T.V about fraternities is completely false. Being part of a fraternity, I conducted an observation on San Jose State University Fraternities. There is a plethora of fraternities on campus, but my research will be focusing on social fraternities like Alpha Tau Omega, Delta Sigma Phi, and etc. Throughout my essay, I'll be talking about culture at a fraternity, Greek life during school, and their benefaction to their community. Singling out other social fraternities, I decided to rush Alpha Tau Omega (ATO) and Delta Sigma Phi (DSP) as they seem to work with aspects of my life such as my personality and determination for academics. In the process of joining a fraternity, there is a time called “Rush Week” where I attended multiple housewarming activities that Alpha Tau Omega and DSP provided. At the cessation of my Rush Week, I was provided an interview by both fraternities. The first interview administer was with the compulsory men of Alpha Tau Omega. Before the interview, I envisioned myself being a candidate for their house. I wanted to feel at home with a brotherhood so I prepared myself to be confident accordingly when I went in. These three active members stood up and gradually shook my hand then proceeded to ask me questions about my background. About 30 minutes in, I was persuaded that these were the people I desire to continue a brotherhood with. I also had an interview with Delta Sigma Phi scheduled on the last Sunday of January. While arriving on time, I was left outside in the cold for 10 minutes as a result of the night before. The incautious members of DSP had a party to commend their week of soberness. At that point, it ordinarily made me question their responsibility to the new recruits. During my interview, I was bromidic with questions nevertheless with their competence. At the end it felt like the shortest interview ever. Notwithstanding I decided to accept a bid from Alpha Tau Omega. On Bid night, I was ecstatic due to our extended Bid to be part of their house. One circumstance that showed a different side of fraternities was their willingness to better themselves along with the people in the house. They said to us “We choose you men because of the strengths you can provide to our house…” I felt the Alpha Tau Omega’s motivation was to improve so they can achieve more for the future. About 2 weeks later, we had our first meeting together. In the unpretentious room, I felt like there was not any reason for me to disarrange my chances in the fraternity. If granted the opportunity to become a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. I expected to become a better man once finishing the member in take process. Throughout the process I expect to develop many different skills that I can carry throughout life. I would like to become more professional as well as to enhance my networking skills. It all starts with rush week. Every fraternity will put together some open invite events for any student who wishes to join the fraternity. Every year over hundreds of students sign up for rush week. You can sign up for as many fraternities as you wish, but it is always a good idea to sign up for a maximum of 2. The open invite events are meet and greets, for potential new members to meet the brothers and get a feel if that fraternity is right for them.
Greek organizations, such as, fraternities and sororities have been a part of the college experience for centuries. We pride ourselves in brotherly and sisterly love, academic success, and helping others. There are countless stereotypes and myths that surround the “Greek life” name. Just some myths include: all Greeks haze their members, they only care about physical looks not personalities, and they go to college just to party and get drunk. Kappa Delta Sorority upholds none of these stereotypes. We have a strong no haze policy. Hazing is defined as an activity or situation that can cause emotional, mental, or physical discomfort. If a member is caught hazing or if a new member is caught allowing herself to be hazed, there will be major consequences, such as, national probation or deferral of initiation. Kappa Delta also does not look at physical appearance as the only quality for possible new members. We look at personality and qualifications that can benefit our sorority; instead of having a group of women that are pretty and popular, we like to have women with strong morals, work ethic, and have the willingness to love each and every member of Kappa Delta. Kappa Delta Sorority is like no other fraternity or sorority on campus; we do not waste our time with partying and drinking. We pride ourselves in our historical background, philanthropies, and our values. I know Kappa Delta is the best sorority not only on MTSU campus but in the whole country.

Greek organizations are debatably the most undervalued and misconceived aspect of college campuses. Most people don’t see the benefits that fraternities and sororities bring to college campuses and their communities. Some see these organizations as large beneficial clubs and others see them as potential problems. Many of the allegations put forth by individuals that discredit the benefits and good deeds done by Greek organizations are weak justifications for their removal from college campuses. Greek organizations provide campus communities with academically responsible students, philanthropic activities and increase community involvement.
So I typed into Google just that, “what are the negative aspects of fraternities and sororities”. I came across numerous sources that did not really give me a solid base of research. Instead, I decided to use the first source I researched which was Positive and Negative Effects of Greek Life in College and use information on the negative section of the article. For those that are not aware, there are two major reasons as to why people do not want to part take in Greek Life. The first reason is the financial obligations are not a joke when it comes to these social groups. Many people would love to join Greek Life however money issues are preventing them to join. If colleges want their students to succeed and feel as if they are in control of their college life, prices should be lowered. Greek Life should be accessible to anybody that believes it will enhance their college success. The other reason people are hesitant to join a fraternity or sorority is that students do not want to be hazed. The founders paved the way for future sorority members to take into heed and have an example of what to go by. The Women’s Suffrage is one of the many struggles the founders had to face. To face a problem within your community of this magnitude shows not only Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated strength, but how diligent the founders were. The founders of this sorority believed in a cause and stressed the importance of overcoming the barrier that was set before them. There are sorority members who continue to surpass and help solve the struggles within our community, such as getting our young people to vote and making sure African Americans are aware of their HIV status. These contributions say more about the women of this sorority than any other. This sorority is very diligent regarding the various events that they host. Time, quality, and effort are the traits I notice in the events that I have attended. The positive actions that the members of this sorority continue to produce, does not go unnoticed. The time and conscientiousness that these Delta women put in gives me great knowledge on how I should portray myself at all times as a future Delta woman. Walking up dilapidated stairs, my friend and I enter into the chapter room of Beta Sigma Psi, where the Little Sisters of the Gold Rose meets every week. The fraternity house smells of stale beer and sweat, and has clear signs of past parties and shenanigans.
