Michael Reyes ENC 1102 18 October 2016 Is Greek Life Enriching or Distressing to College Success Summer term 2016 was the very first time I was considered a college student who attended Florida International University or any university for that matter. I was nervous, intimidated by the drastic changes that were about to occur in my life. As a first semester freshman I did not know what the college life held for me and did not want to. I was closed off from my surroundings and felt comfortable going from home to school and back home. It was convenient not having to be involved in all of these extracurricular activities and clubs. I would always have more than enough time to excel in my studies as I breezed through the semester with exceptional The article starts off with interesting statistics about the success that Greek Life has brought to people's lives. “85% of Fortune 500 executives were part of Greek life. The first female astronaut was Greek. So was the first female senator. And college graduation rates are 20% higher among Greeks than non-Greeks.” This part of the article immediately had me intrigued because it shows how impactful Greek Life can be to your life. “I really see that there’s a great correlation between those skills being developed and the ability to be successful in any endeavor,” she said. “Not necessarily just famous-successful, like a president or CEO, but successful as a community leader or as a small business owner.” This source in its entirety was good insight about how Greek Life’s main focus is not to party but to better yourself like many of today's leaders. The article is an attractive read to students who are skeptic about the purpose of joining these So I typed into Google just that, “what are the negative aspects of fraternities and sororities”. I came across numerous sources that did not really give me a solid base of research. Instead, I decided to use the first source I researched which was Positive and Negative Effects of Greek Life in College and use information on the negative section of the article. For those that are not aware, there are two major reasons as to why people do not want to part take in Greek Life. The first reason is the financial obligations are not a joke when it comes to these social groups. Many people would love to join Greek Life however money issues are preventing them to join. If colleges want their students to succeed and feel as if they are in control of their college life, prices should be lowered. Greek Life should be accessible to anybody that believes it will enhance their college success. The other reason people are hesitant to join a fraternity or sorority is that students do not want to be hazed. Hazing is humiliation during activities in which fraternities and sororities put you through to become a member. It is their way of seeing how prepared you are to be initiated into the group. Although this does not happen at FIU because it is forbidden, many schools throughout the United States haze associate members. This
