Value of Speech In the world we live in we usually take the value of free speech for granted. Sometimes, as humans we don’t understand how to control the way we speak. So, we try to keep a balance between what there is actually to say and not to say. The idea of balancing free speech and silence is a difficult idea for some. In storytelling it is hard to control the way we speak because, the way we say something can be interpreted differently by others. In Salman Rushdie’s Haroun and the Sea of Stories the significance of stories is being taken over by the value of words spoken by others. The lost of a person affects the way your thoughts are brought out. A piece of text evidence is “Haroun found that he couldn’t keep his mind on anything for very long, or to be precise, for more than eleven minutes at a time (23).” To elaborate on this, when Haroun’s mother left it was exactly at eleven pm she had ran off and left the family behind. This affected Haroun because when he would think of something he could not concentrate on his thoughts for more than eleven minutes. When you can not keep your thoughts together suddenly everything turns into a blur. “What’s the use of stories that aren’t even true? (22).” This is showing that if you have something to say then elaborate on it because, you're probably only given the one chance to say what you have to. Also if you're story doesn't seem to have a true meaning attached to it then what's the point of telling it.“When it comes to the land of chup… it’s all mostly gossip and flim-flam(79).” This is showing that if you have the opportunity of free speech then don't waste it. Tell the true story and don't make up lies or false information that will ruin what you have to
