The SNAP program is a personal social service that provides low income families with a means to purchase food items for their qualified household members. This program is designed to give recipients a method to make and purchase healthy food choices and eliminate the reasons people go without food.
b) What specific services/benefits does the policy establish? The SNAP program is a supplemental food program that helps recipients purchase food to stay healthy and reduce hunger. The recipient receives monthly allotments on a state issued debit card to purchase food items from vendors that participate in the SNAP program. The chart below shows the current (October 1, 2014 through September 30, 2015) allotments based on people in a household ("USDA Snap," 2014, para. 12).
