The proverb “A single bracelet does not jingle” signifies to me that while one bracelet might be beautiful and make a musical sound, a group of bracelets is magnified in beauty and is comparable to an orchestra making itself heard more loudly as it works together to perform a beautiful piece of music that is pleasing to many listeners. It only takes one individual to create change. A great example of this is a woman by the name of Norma McCorvey, who was also known as “Jane Roe”. Her choice to pursue legal counsel to receive a medical procedure changed women’s healthcare as we know it today. The case itself received much acclaim both positive and negative. Supreme Court handed down its landmark decision in the case of Roe v. Wade, which recognized that the constitutional right to privacy extends to a woman’s right to make her own personal medical decisions — including the decision to have an abortion without interference from politicians.” ( At present there are many organizations that rally for a woman’s right to choose what happens to her own body. This extends from neighborhood communities, public city council meetings and even into the Supreme Court. The social change needed at the time of the ruling of the Supreme Court was not only for women to have rights over their own bodies, but to provide safe, effective healthcare to all women. Previous to this ruling, many women died from having abortions as they were not always performed by licensed medical personnel.
