In chapter thirteen in PARENT–CHILD RELATIONS: An Introduction to Parenting, the non-traditional family type talked about is adolescent parents. One in six teen girls has been predicted to give birth before the age of twenty (Mollborn & Blalock, 2012, p. 846). Risk factors that occur at birth include the likelihood of being born prematurely and to have lower birth rate, which could cause higher rates of mortality in the babies born (Bigner & Gerhardt, 2014, p. 294). The mother too could suffer during labor due to being small the mother could have poor maternal weight causing hypertension that is pregnancy related and anemia ("Care of adolescent parents and their children," 2001, p. 429).There are numerous health concerns that are present in the children of this non- traditional family type such as higher brain damage incidences, respiratory complications, membrane disease, and epilepsy (Bigner & Gerhardt, 2014, p. 294). Later in life the child of the adolescent mother could have mental disabilities and developmental problems. The mothers are also less likely to touch, smile, vocalize to their children, and be less sensitive causing the mother to become less accepting of the infants behavior ("Care of adolescent parents and their children," 2001, p. 430). Marriage between the adolescent parents can cause instability and divorce, which occurs in sixty present within five years of marriage (Bigner & Gerhardt, 2014, p. 289). Teenage mothers tend to drop out of school and are unable to earn enough income for their children and selves, the majority of the drop out mothers will not be able to hold a job at entry level (Bigner & Gerhardt, 2014, p. 290).
