The literary device I chose to explore is the point of view. Authors realized that there are many different ways to tell a story and the point of view is the position of who is telling the story, and, therefore, of how it gets told (pg.235). The point of view is important to an author because it help portray the emotions and reactions of the characters and expresses what they what to the readers. Per our reading for this class we see that there are four basic types of point of view. Omniscient is when the story is told in the third person by a narrator whose knowledge and prerogatives are unlimited (pg.236). This gives the narrator the free will to tell as much as they want about the mindsets and feelings of the characters. Third-person limited point of view is when a story is told in the third-person but from the viewpoint of one character in the story (pg.237). By the author making the poem told in this point of view helps the reader to relate to Richard Cory and the people of the town. The narrator puts Mr. Cory up on a pedestal by stating that “Richard Cory went down town” as if he lived away from others and lowered himself to come downtown and “We the people of the pavement looked at him” (pg.1008) putting themselves below him. I believe that by the author using this point of view teaches us a lesson that we can judge a book by its cover. My Mistress Eyes by William Shakespeare is told in the first person point of view.
