Barack Obama deliver the keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention in 2004. Obama establishes credibility by starting off to tell a story about how he got to where he is today. He talks about how his father had a great opportunity to study here in America. His father’s dream of starting a family in the land of opportunity for himself and for his children. Obama developed an emotional connection with his audience by talking about his family dream for him and for his future. When he refers back to his family, he then goes to talk about his experience and how it would not have been possible for his dream to be achieve anywhere else and that has impacted him to make a difference. He kept a consistent energy high throughout his whole speech, keeping a hold of his audience. He uses several parallel language throughout his speech, For example, “ ...they must be found, they must be pursued, and they must be defeated.” With the parallel language, he also uses several antithesis throughout his speech. For example, “ If there is a senior citizen somewhere who can’t pay for their prescription drug and having to chose between paying the medicine or the rent, it makes my life poor even if it’s not my grandparent.” When he takes somebody else struggle and care about it, he makes it very memorable because he chose to care even if it does not physically affect him. When he would speak, his speech was a problem solution where he pointed out the problem and the solution to fixing them. It was very impressive because he was able to give the speech completely from memory. When he spoke, the volume was consistent throughout the speech. He had great intonation and was able to adjust when he needed to and when he did not. Pauses where use throughout his pitch to give a time to process his message. He articulated his words, which made it very easy to understand and follow along when he gave the speech. He would smile throughout his speech, keeping eye contacts with his audience. He would turn left to right and right to left to make his audience feel that he is talking to all of them. Also, he uses gestures throughout his speech which emphasizes his points.
