My ability to improve after prior failures is best exemplified by my resilience in school. After graduating from high school, I was lost. I did not have the grades or preparation to pursue a college education or even the means to pay for college. During this time I had come to believe that my role as migrant was to work and that an education was out of the picture for me, but I decided to go against the expectations of others and I enrolled in a community college. I started college by taking developmental courses, during that time my grasp of the English language was well below average and I was aware of the need to refine my skills. Eventually my unsustainable work schedule along with my ignorance of proper study habits made my grades suffered
Echterling, Presbury and McKee (2005) define crisis as a turning point in one’s life that is brief, but a crucial time in which, there is opportunity for dramatic growth and positive changes, as well as the danger of violence and devastation. They further state that whatever the outcome, people do not emerge from a crisis unchanged; if there is a negative resolution, the crisis can leave alienation, bitterness, devastated relationships and even death in its wake; on the other hand, if the crisis is resolved successfully a survivor can develop a deeper appreciation for life, a stronger sense of resolve, a mature perspective, greater feelings of competence, and richer relationships.
On top of that, I learned a valuable lesson from the failure and the loss as well. From that day forth, the past experiences transformed me to be a hard-working and responsible person. It was C S Holling in 1973 that introduced the term ‘Resilience’ into ecological literature as a way of understanding non-linear dynamics observed in the ecosystem. Resilience theory is referred to the capacity of a social ecological system to withstand shock and to re-build and re-new itself. According to C S Holling father of resilience theory “whatever you do climate is going to change, some of them will be sudden, some of them will be crisis but in fact these are opportunities for people to learn on how to deal with and then turn the crisis into opportunity”. Resilience is structured around acceptance of disturbance. According to Brian Walker “Resilience is the capacity of a system to undergo change and still retain its basic function and structure. In other words it is the capacity to undergo some change without crossing a threshold into a different system regime”. C S Holling defines the behaviour of ecosystem in two different ways: stability and resilience. According to him “resilience determines the persistence of the relationships within the system and is a measure of the ability of the systems to absorb changes of state variables, driving variables, parameters and still persist” . Resilience is a part of the system and stability refers to the ability of the system to return to the original position after the disturbance . According to C S Holling there are two components that are important in the system they are cyclical behaviour and its frequency and amplitude, and the configuration of forces caused by the positive and negative feedback relations. Resilience is about withstanding shocks like climate change or financial crisis and turn the circumstance into an opportunity or innovation.
Resiliency is an important quality for successful leaders to have. However, leaders are often challenged with considerations of “how do I help others navigate the body slams of life? How do I help the organization and people I lead is recovered from changing market conditions, tragic circumstances, perplexing dilemmas? How do I bounce back and how do I help others do the same?” (Dees, 2013, p. 31). These among other considerations present a challenge to the leadership of an organization.
I must say that my personal strengths lies within my determination, perseverance, and persistence to work hard and become a better person. Throughout my whole life, I have used individuals and their compliments to motivate myself to become better, faster, and stronger as a person, hoping to exceed their expectations. That might sound shallow, but those individuals are the fuel that keeps me from ever giving up. On the other hand, my personal challenges consists of the fact that I am a weakness to disappointment. Disappointment from a mentor whom I respect can stop me in my tracks, leaving me in state where that is the only thing I can think about. As a result, I work hard to not just stop disappointment but to prove them that their disappointment in me is just temporary. Ayat Alansari Assignmnet#2 Reaction on Peter Gray’s article “Declining Student Resilience: A Serious Problem for Colleges” I agree with Peter Gray on the fact that college students struggle during their university life, especially in their first semester of collage. Either freshmen or sophomore year is the first opportunity to form a collage/university identity. As a matter of fact, students at this point are still not stable to make their decisions as well as carry responsibilities. However, faculties and some parents are expecting of collage-aged students to handle issues of academics, relationships, and finances. According to the article, students who are reported to the counseling have highly increased because students could not help themselves out and they call emergency counseling or police for help rather than their parents.
And if it is true that the lessons we take from failure can be fundamental to later success then I am right. This is where my path to success really begins. It is never late to start again. Small things that aren’t so small can have a big repercussion in someone's life. We as human beings need to learn how to be more loving, respectful and compassionate. I am so proud to be who I am today because of this past experiences. I believe almost everybody has had a time in their lives in which they failed, nobody is perfect. When I am asked to make meaning of my life, the biggest recurring theme is my resounding resiliency. I am sure of myself. I have unwavering hope, optimism, and trust in myself. Often, this shocks those who are just getting to know me. Others are not shy to call me naïve. People are normally quite curious as to where this aspect of my personality came from. A recent failure that has changed how I go about my daily life is one that many college freshman experience in their first year. In high school I was a very good student, but I did not have to put in a lot of effort to get the grades that I wanted. I would joke with my friends and say that high school taught me how to put in the least amount of effort, and still get the maximum result. All of my teachers told me, as they did every student, that college was going to be different and if you do not put in more effort it would be very difficult. I knew this coming into school, but I am not sure if part of me wanted to prove people wrong, or if I actually was just adjusting to college life. I did not study as much as I should of, and as a result my grades suffered. Luckily I did not completely ruin my grade point average, but since first semester I have completely changed my study habits. This has taught a much needed lesson about hard work, and I am determined to never again fail at my studies. I am the kind of person that learns a lot from failures. My dad has always told me it is ok to make a mistake, but never make the same mistake twice. This I a motto that I live by.
