It was the decision of the counselors to make up a story about the swamp ghost so that all of the campers would be afraid of going to the swamp. However they never thought about the fact that there might indeed be a swamp ghost. Who in the world would ever consider this? In William Shakespeare's Hamlet, the ghost of Hamlet’s father is intended to be seen as a real ghost. Around 1600, when the play Hamlet was written, many people believed in mystical creatures like witches, monsters, and most importantly: ghosts. With so many people believing in these characters, it makes sense that Shakespeare portrays the ghost of Hamlet’s father as a real figure. Many examples support this, such as when the guards in Act I scene i see the ghost, which proves it’s not just in Hamlet’s imagination. But some people can not see the ghost, such as Hamlet’s mother in Act III scene iiiii. Hamlet sees the ghost but she can not. This could be used as evidence to say the ghost is not real though. Shakespeare shows us though this information, the high complications oh having ghosts in a story.
The Signalman and The Red Room as Characteristic Nineteenth Century Ghost Stories There are many characteristics that help to make up a typical nineteenth century ghost story. During this essay certain aspects will be discussed to find out if ‘The Signalman’ by Charles Dickens and ‘The Red Room’ by H.G. Wells contain the elements that constitute a ghost story. The main elements of a typical ghost story include the stereotypical aspects such as distortion of light to create shadow, isolation, and fear as well as emotive imagery, the inclusion of a non-believer/believer and having a suitable ending e.g. a twist. All these elements add to the tension and overall atmosphere of a nineteenth century ghost story. The first element that will be touched upon is the addition of the conventional features of a ghost story.
“Ghost of the plantation” serves as a phrase that summarizes the lifestyle and mentality of the African American community. The “ghost” is a spiritual form of repression that still exist in the African American society that haunts recaptures minds of the society, while the “plantation” is the home to many slaves and cage from freedom. When integrated the “ghost of the plantation” symbolizes the condition of a traumatic pass that controls African Americans socially and mentally. It is mental enslavement that is resulted from the historical trauma of the past African ancestors that is transcended into to the current generations. According to author, the ghost is slavery that recaptures the mind, imprison motivation, perception, aspiration and identity.

This behavior supports the social implications of the story, showing that the teller herself held the fear of being alone and of darkness. She also spoke of the soldier’s image respectfully, while admitting to a fear of the apparition. Overall, the performance of the tale ultimately made it a ghost story while supporting its connection with societal ideas.
Ghost stories have been popular throughout the ages. During the nineteenth century, there was a sudden boom and ghost stories were made popular. Storytelling was the main source of entertainment as there weren't any films, TV's or computer games. People would gather around in groups telling or reading each other stories. The stories were made more real by the superstitions people kept and as the rooms were lit by dim candle light, it built a sense of atmosphere. Most ghost stories were written in the nineteenth century period, so people could imagine such things happening to them, in the places they lived. As storytelling was the main form of entertainment, people had nothing to compare it to, so it built tension, suspense and fear. In the nineteenth century there weren't many scientific advances. Everything was blamed on higher or supernatural forces, therefore, people believed the explanations given in ghost stories. I will be comparing and contrasting four ghost stories which were all written in the nineteenth century. They are ?The Old Nurse?s Story? by Elizabeth Gaskell, 1855 and ?The Ostler? by Wilkie Collins, 1855.
One of the most well-known urban legends told is the story of Bigfoot. Much of the research has shown that there are several names assigned to the mammoth ape. According to Napier (1973), Bigfoot would be the creature found mostly in Northwest America, Sasquatch would be a creature named in British Colombia, the 49th parallel in the north-west states of America and Northern California, and the Abominable Snowman, or the Yeti would be the creature named in the Himalayas. Of course, “Wild Man” and “Savage” have also been names used to identify the creature. There’s been thousands of sightings across the world, but there have also been many misidentifications where those who think they have seen Bigfoot have really just seen an ordinary animal or person. Arment (2006) states an individual’s perception may color the eyewitness account. Such misidentifications include: hermits, fugitives, refugees, bears, gorillas, and simply people making up stories or rumors. In addition to sightings, there have been photos, videos, movies, and TV shows that strongly indicates the possibility of the existence of this creature. Though there is much evidence from sightings, myths, and recordings that Bigfoot exists, there is also much proof that it could all be a hoax. Incorrect sightings have led skeptics to argue over the existence of this being stating Bigfoot is really just a fable. So one has to ask oneself, does Bigfoot really exist or is it just another urban legend?

When Tom and Becky got out of the cave, He closed the cave and makes sure that Injun Joe was not able to open the cave again. Tom goes to Huckleberry and tells him that he has seen Injun Joe and that he knew where the treasure was. Tom and Huckleberry took a boat and went back to the cave. There they searched for the treasure. Huckleberry saw a cross in the cave and thought that it was Injun Joe’s ghost. He was scared because of this, but then Tom said that there are no ghosts in the neighborhood of crosses. They kept on searching for the treasure and finally they found it. They went back to the village with the money. There, they told the people that they had found a treasure but nobody believed them so tom showed the treasure. Huckleberry could stay and live with the man who helped him. And a few days later, Huckleberry told Tom that he could keep all the money. But when Huckleberry needed some, Tom had to give it to him.

Just a valley of nothingness for miles. What was I to do with people I wasn’t even friends with for four days? The mere thought of it consumed me. Then I hear the scoutmaster shout, “Okay boys! We’re going to kick things off with a bang. Your first activity for today will be to locate your camping gear!” Immediately I thought to myself, “what? Are you kidding me?” The day shifted from bad to worse, and I didn’t think it was going to stop there. So here I was with my troop, maps in hand, the mixture of fear and anxiety overwhelming us. We contemplated our game plan for a while. Another scout, who would later become my best friend, broke the silence. “Well, better get going before it gets dark. Don’t want to be sleeping out in the open.” Reluctantly, the rest of us got up and followed.
Ghost Stories Ghost stories revolve around lots of Spooky tales that work on displacing the reader's fear. Some of the main techniques which make them successful involve: Fear, Drama, Danger and Suspense. However, the main idea is that they create tension too. Such stories which use tension to dramatic affect are "The Red Room" by H.G. Wells and "Farthing House" by Susan Hill; both are written in first person narrative to allow the reader to get scared along with the main character. Both stories also build tension through their Style, Setting, Structure and Language.
The Dilemma of a Ghost is a short play written by the Ghanaian writer, Ama Ata Aidoo. The story is about a young Ghanaian man, Ato, currently studying in America. Here, he meets and falls in love with Eulalie; an African-American girl who lives in America. When he returns home with his new bride, Ato is torn between his family’s traditional custom against his wife’s western culture. His marriage and his wife’s behaviour become sources of great criticism from both family members and the Ghanaian community at large. The writer uses various scenarios to point out the difference between the African traditional culture and the modern western culture.
