Think about our recent election: one man and one women. But were they represented in the same way? If you think about it, Hillary was represented in a much different way than what Trump was, and it was obvious that the media favored Donald. Although some people may not want to agree, this is not the only case where this happens; there are countless times where the way women are portrayed by the media is drastically different than the way that men are. By now, it should be evident that women and men are represented at different rates in media, whether it be politicians, certain types of leaders, or simply women who hold power. This is an important issue, because the way women are represented in the media is what reinforces the traditional, yet oppressive, idea of women in our society. Sadly, this is something that our society has to recognize in order to make changes and to progress our gender equality within the United States. In class, we discussed how women are represented based on their looks and their beauty and how their image is the stereotypical “perfect white woman.” This would be a woman who is tall, skinny, wears make-up, and is all- around beautiful. The goal of feminizing these women is to supply viewers with “eye candy”. It is not always evident what is being done, but the subtle changes to the way women look is detrimental to make changes in a positive direction regarding gender equality. Feminizing women in media this way entertains the idea that the only thing that women are good for is to look pretty and be there for the man’s pleasure. This is not the case, and it should be
