Belvedere meaning “beautiful view” in Italian is a word that many people correlated with the style and design of the Italian Renaissance gardens. The sight of these gardens were truly remarkable in a time where design would settle for nothing less of such. Throughout the report many things will be brought to light in relation to the Renaissance gardens. This report will include many sub-sections that will pertain to the design of these gardens. These sections include, the history of the Renaissance gardens, their influences, the garden’s features and the multiple purposes of the different gardens from the Renaissance. In fact it would be more suiting if the Renaissance would be known as an era of invention and reinvention. They perfected many things that had already been discussed and perhaps attempted to create before. For instance they took the medieval garden designs and just altered them a little. Instead of using man made walls they just tweaked that though a little bit and started using nature. So they broke down these big walls that were surrounding the gardens and this gave them more room to create their gardens. A hedge wall in fact surrounded many of the gardens so they still were using that enclosure technique but just modified. The medieval gardens were a place of meditation and prayer and were basically comprised of vegetables, medicinal herbs and fruits. In the Renaissance if you were to see fruit and vegetables they were for an ornamental purpose unless it was a garden strictly composed of such things. Since the Greek and Romans influenced the Renaissance many of their gardens shared the same interests. So you would typically see things from those eras such as sculptures and antique figures that were mocked to look like the ones from those time periods. They were obsessed with out doing those before them so they would always try to create similar but more elegant and in their eyes, superior features. Not only did the Greek and Romans help shape the Renaissance gardens but their ancestors from the medieval period did so as well.
