My RIP companion essay was a complete mess with no structure in the first draft. I believe it was because I had procrastinated to complete both the first drafts for the RIP project and essay. I finished my RIP project then moved on to my companion essay, and the transition was vastly different because in the RIP project I was writing for a different audience than in the companion essay, which was an academic audience. In addition, I forgot that we had been given a prompt with specific instructions and guidelines for the companion essay, which gave the structure for the essay. For example in the assignment “Critical Reading and Writing: High Risk of military domestic violence on the home front” I failed to correctly determine the genre as well as the conventions of the genre. While doing the assignment I was tentative on how to identify the genre and conventions, in addition I was not the best at researching. I felt lost and wrote down what I thought the genre might have been and some of the conventions I noticed. Even though I did not correctly answer the questions, I did learn valuable lessons from this assignments. These lessons such as, analyzing the text in depth and figuring out what to research in order to help me complete the assignment has progressed my writing. Reflecting on all the assignments completed allows me to realize how much my writing and thinking process has changed. Writing essays before writing 37 was something I dreaded. However, realizing now that I have the ability to write compelling essays such as my RIP project where I wrote an editorial for The New York Times. I am proud of this project and as a result has impacted my decisions when it comes to my writing process, such as spending more time researching, having others peer review, and revising it. These are all steps I learned in WR 37 which I will employ to all of my future
