My RIP companion essay was a complete mess with no structure in the first draft. I believe it was because I had procrastinated to complete both the first drafts for the RIP project and essay. I finished my RIP project then moved on to my companion essay, and the transition was vastly different because in the RIP project I was writing for a different audience than in the companion essay, which was an academic audience. In addition, I forgot that we had been given a prompt with specific instructions and guidelines for the companion essay, which gave the structure for the essay. For example in the assignment “Critical Reading and Writing: High Risk of military domestic violence on the home front” I failed to correctly determine the genre as well as the conventions of the genre. While doing the assignment I was tentative on how to identify the genre and conventions, in addition I was not the best at researching. I felt lost and wrote down what I thought the genre might have been and some of the conventions I noticed. Even though I did not correctly answer the questions, I did learn valuable lessons from this assignments. These lessons such as, analyzing the text in depth and figuring out what to research in order to help me complete the assignment has progressed my writing. Reflecting on all the assignments completed allows me to realize how much my writing and thinking process has changed. Writing essays before writing 37 was something I dreaded. However, realizing now that I have the ability to write compelling essays such as my RIP project where I wrote an editorial for The New York Times. I am proud of this project and as a result has impacted my decisions when it comes to my writing process, such as spending more time researching, having others peer review, and revising it. These are all steps I learned in WR 37 which I will employ to all of my future

Most of us write in some form every day, so you would expect that most of us would be well practiced and pretty good at writing. I read and write all the time; I have been taken several college courses and nearly all of them require write of some form. However, before taking this class not only was I not a good writer, I knew I wasn’t a good writer. Now I am not saying that I am ready to write my first novel, but I certainly more confident in turning in my college papers. The content of this course and the style of teaching was incredibly beneficial to me. Throughout this course we had multiple assignments that were aimed to improve us as writers. I am sure that everyone took something different from this course, and I am sure that each student took more from some areas than others; however for me there were three major things that I saw that I benefited from most. I am currently an English 160 student who is hoping to move on to the next course, which is English 161. I understand the requirements for English 161. It require students to explore a topic in some depth and conduct independent research related to that topic. Conducting research allows students to learn what it is like to participate in academic culture, posing questions about important issues and developing an argument in response to what others have said. Over the course of this semester, I have progressed as a writer. Picking up new skills and dropping old bad habits has transformed me into a much better writer than when I entered the English 101. Entering this class, the only English classes that I took were mandatory high school classes all four years. In these classes, however, content was focused on reading novels, poems, and literature. In this class I have really learned to use a different level of thinking in my papers. Teachers often have complemented my ability to prove a point with the spoken word, but always offer advice when referencing my ability to compel by the written word.
