In order to succeed in the twenty first century, one must absolutely have reading skills. Reading is so much more than just a hobby. It is absolutely essential if one wants to survive in today’s world. Since it is such a crucial skill, it should be more heavily placed on children. Children, at the latest, start to learn how to read as soon as they enter the education system. But, it is best if parents motivate their children to start reading to their kids as soon as possible. The home is the biggest factor in teaching reading literacy to children. Parents must motivate their children to read at home to ensure reading success. Imagine not being able to read something as simple as the directions on a medicine bottle or a street sign. The United States Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) defines literacy as, “the ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, communicate and compute, using printed and written materials associated with varying contexts.” UNESCO goes on to say that literacy allows an individual to achieve his/her goals and to participate fully in society. The child will unconsciously group reading and happiness together and later on will always view reading as positive. This will encourage reading in later life. The earlier parents start reading to their children, the better. The parent serves as a role model to the children by recreational readings, library visits and reading at home. Home reading is something that should definitely be encouraged more, as the home has a strong impact on reading achievement. Children’s values, beliefs, attitudes, and self-concept are rooted in the home. In fact, it is in the home that language development begins. Parents should provide a warm and inviting atmosphere to engage children in reading. While parents read, they should nurse or cuddle the children. This engages in positive feelings and the children associate these happy thoughts with reading. Parents should create a specific routine so the child knows when reading time is and can anticipate it.
