What makes a true hero? Heroes can be big roles in people’s lives. “He is more than a hero, he is a God in my eyes” (Sappho). Sappho is saying that people see heroes greater than the average person. “People identify with their heroes and try to become more like them, in their own minds and through their actions” (Schlenker). Schlenker is saying that people want to be and act like heroes. Author William Golding believes a true hero will make mistakes and falter in judgements. They will focus on the bigger picture. Heroes will be brave and they will ultimately face their fears obstacles. Also, heroes are noble, sacrificial, courageous, and accomplish high goals. Bravery is key to being a hero. It is what makes them strong and fearless. “He is more than a hero” (Sappho). When heroes are brave, people see them greater than they actually are. In the novel Ralph showed bravery when he went into Jacks clan and got Piggy’s glasses back that Jack stole from him. “I’ve come to see about the fire, said Ralph, and about Piggy’s specs” (Page 176). “Willingness to risk personal safety to help others” (Schlenker). Risking your life for others is a great example of bravery. Rosa Parks is an example of a hero because she was brave and did not say no when told to move her spot on a segregated bus (“Rosa Parks Biography”). To be a leader, one has to show excellence. Heroes strive to improve themselves in every way possible. In the novel Ralph shows leadership when he blows the conch to get everyone together. “Let him be chief with the trumpet-thing” (Page 22). He had to be the leader since he was head over everyone. Ralph used leadership skills to take responsibility over everyone on the island, set rules, and keep everyone safe. The Naval officer asked “’Who’s boss here?’” “’I am’ said Ralph loudly” (Page 201). He showed leadership by taking the role of chief. “He is God in my eyes” (Sappho).
