Racism and discrimination are common factors that current society faces, but these are not only contemporary problems. For instance, research has shown that since the nineteen century, “when cultural anthropology became an established academic discipline, one of the underlying objectives of the scholars in the field was to probe that blacks and other nonwhite ethnic groups were genetically and cognitive inferior than whites.” (The Journal of Blacks in Higher Education 24) Through history constant studies and techniques have developed in order to test theories that justify discrimination, and as the quote states, one common goal was to establish white superiority among all races. Men are represented as the authority and the head of the family, without giving the woman the opportunity to contribute with her ideas and opinions. Armand, as many man in his time, sees woman as inferior not only physically but also intellectually. This notion of man superiority is also a problem that current society confronts, and it is more commonly present in lower classes. There are still cases in which men insult and hit woman because they see them as inferior and not worth of respect. Furthermore, in the story we have the case of black servant women. Who besides of having to deal with all the abuses a slave suffers, have also to confront the discrimination that their sex inherently has. This group suffers the racism of the entire white society, and also is discriminated by white woman who do not treat them as equals. Even though slavery is not currently allowed, there is still discrimination towards women who work as maids in houses or companies.     Temporary inequality exists as a means of “improving” a subordinate to the level of a dominant. After the period of inequality is over, the two view each other as equals. The other form of inequality, permanent inequality, exists solely because of an ascription of inferiority to a subordinate that is inherent and unchangeable. Unlike temporary inequality, there is no possibility of improvement for the subordinate; they are, in the eyes of the dominant, inferior and impossible to “fix.” The dominants, who view themselves naturally superior to the subordinates, begin to take advantage of the subordinates. “Out of the total range of human possibilities, the activities most highly valued in any particular culture will tend to be enclosed within the domain of the dominant group; less valued functions are relegated to the subordinates” (Rothenberg, 112). Moreover, the subordinates, who by this point are under the total control of the dominant group, may begin to internalize the value of the dominants. “[Subordinates’] incapacities are ascribed to innate defects or deficiencies of mind or body…More importantly, subordinates themselves can come to find it difficult to believe in their own ability” (112). This theory of domination and subordination are clearly mirrored in race relations in the United States. Her position as a slave only amplified this dehumanization. Within “Désirée’s Baby,” the following line, “‘And the way he cries,’ went on Désirée, ‘is deafening. Armand heard him the other day as far away as La Blanche’s cabin,’” (Chopin 2) implies that Armand and La Blanche have a sexual relationship.
