Rachel Dein is a London Based artist, who studied Fine Arts at Middlesex University . She is most famously known for her tiles made of cement and plaster featuring molds of flowers. She currently runs and owns the Tactile Studio in North London to support herself and her three children. Before setting up her own studio, but after going to art school, she decided to take up an apprenticeship at The Royal Opera House and later branched out to other theaters to continue her prop making career including The English National Opera, The West End Theaters, London Transport Museum and Selfridges Christmas windows. Her time in prop making allowed her to explore her love of theatre, film, and opera while expanding her knowledge of 3d design. She also enjoys gardening, which is where she has gotten some of the materials for her craft. Her work resembles fossils and botanical illustration pages at the same time. Her simplicity and willingness to give back to her community is also an attribute I admire of her. Her work is important because of it has been used a medium to convey precious memories through the preservation of flowers. This artist inspires me because of her mastery of such a simple technique to create beautifully simplistic, yet intricately detailed works. This is an aesthetic I hope to achieve in my personal work because of my love of detail and organic shapes, such as flowers. It is amazing how she has achieved such wonderfully detailed and organic shapes using a medium that I never thought to be used in such an organic
Vera Olivia Weatherbie was an accomplished painter in her own right, regarded more so now than during her lifetime. She was born in 1909 in Vancouver and attended Brittania Secondary School. She grew up in the Strathcona neighbourhood near Chinatown in Vancouver’s East end. Her parents were strict, conservative Presbyterians, yet somehow she was able to persuade them to let her attend the Vancouver School of Decorative and Applied Arts (VSDAA) at the young age of 16.

Do you know who Sarah Thomas is? She is the NFL’s first female full time and most accomplished female referee. She was born in 1973 in Pascagoula, Mississippi. When she was in highschool she played basketball and softball. The officials never liked her because she would always try to make them change the call and she would disagree with them. It was the same when she went to the University of Mobile. She wanted to stay involved with sports after she graduated, so she joined a church basketball league for men.She played with them for two years until she was told she could no longer play.
The pictures say a lot, however, with petite information. The artwork she displays are somehow complex, and one gets to understand their meaning over time as she uses vivid imagination to bring out facts and fiction together.
In the early 16th century the Netherlands experienced what was called “tulip mania” this was the beginning of the nations love for flora and foliage (Taylor 13). The result of this impressive flower invasion was a society that took a historical turn from which the results still remain today. Flower merchants, botanists and floral still life artists, were occupations that were an accurate reflection of the Netherlands demands (Brown). An interesting example of a life that was effected by, and devoted to the archiving of the flower craze was Rachel Ruysch (1664-1750) the 17th century Dutch flower painter. Rachel Ruyschs’ career straddled the 17th and 18th century, and her stunningly accurate floral pieces reflect the maturing, yet evolving art of floral still life painting (“Rachel Ruysch: Bibliography”). Ruyschs’ Still Life with Flowers on a Marble Tabletop (1716) is an excellent example of a painting that appropriately represents the genre of art that was created solely through specific societal events.

This is a very beautiful painting of a flower that is fully blossomed. Its got white, green, and blue in it. The flower is the center and focus point of this piece of work. The painting looks like a viewpoint from the top of the flower looking down at it. It looks to have four green leafs on each side of the flower. It looks like the sky is in the background with clouds. It’s a very simply and peaceful painting of a gorgeous flower. I like the green in the middle of the flower, how the pedals are green kind of go out the side of the pedals, and forms a spiral. The leafs got a nice dark green to them and detail with them. On November 1, 2016 Maryville University had the honor to welcome Rachel Miller; she is a holocaust survivor and she shared her story with us. Miller was born in Poland of 1938, she is the youngest out of four children. She had two brothers and a sister. Her sister Sabine was her idol and she always looked up to her. Rachel and her family was born Jewish. Miller showed photos that her family had taken together and she named almost everyone in those photos. Her father moved them to Paris because he did not want to serve in Poland army. Once her family moved to Paris her happy childhood began to fade. Her father and uncle was the first to be taken to the concentration camps. They were allowed visitors so her mother insisted her father three times a week. When first approaching this work, one feels immediately attracted to its sense of wonder and awe. The bright colors used in the sun draws a viewer in, but the astonishment, fascination, and emotion depicted in the expression on the young woman keeps them intrigued in the painting. It reaches out to those who have worked hard in their life and who look forward to a better future. Even a small event such as a song of a lark gives them hope that there will be a better tomorrow, a thought that can be seen though the countenance by this girl. Although just a collection of oils on a canvas, she is someone who reaches out to people and inspires them to appreciate the small things that, even if only for a short moment, can make the road ahead seem brighter.
Jennifer Maestre’s, a unique sculptor, caught my eye immediately with her lurring pieces. Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Jennifer went on to study at Wellesley College, and received her B.A., Fine Arts/Economics in 1981. She later went to Massachusetts College of Art, and obtained her B.F.A. in Glass with Distinction, Departmental Honors in the year of 1997. From here Jennifer began to construct beautiful structures that inspired one after the other. She went through many materials such as nails, but couldn’t quite find one that would shape the organic forms she wanted, so she moved to color pencils.
