What used to be lunch breaks could turn into ‘social media breaks’. Just a few years ago, the idea of an online social network was revolutionary. In the last 19 or so years, social media has changed this generation exceedingly. For many people, sites like Facebook and Twitter have been a part of their lives for so long that they don’t remember what it was like without them, most of society can not remember life without the Internet or social media. It is rare to find someone who has not heard of one of the many social networks or who at least has a social network. According to a poll in 2012, 58% of people use social networks.The year 2014 is the social media generation. Facebook, twitter or one of the hundred other social networks users seem to be getting younger and younger. While social media has its pros, it also has its cons. Since this generation was introduced to social networking sites, our privacy has decreased, cyber bullying has increased, it affects students education, and it has modified the way people interact with each other.

Since this generation was introduced to social networking sites, it changed the way we communicate with people. Social media is destroying real communication. People "write posts" on each others walls or “tweet” each other instead of picking up the phone and having an actual conversation with one another and catching up. Instead of meeting up with old family relatives and even meeting new ones you had no clue about in person, people instead upload pictures of themselves just to get "likes". Social Media is becoming the modern way to make friends and the new face-to-face confrontation. Social networks affect social skills. Teenagers do not realize what they post, tweet and share/post online might prevent them from getting a job in the near future and can bring negative consequences months or years down the road. Social media users are vulnerable to hacking, identity theft, and viruses. The degree to which private information is available online and the anonymity the internet seems to provide has made people forget the need to filter the information they post.

All in all, are social media sites really good for our society? Our privacy has decreased, students education has decreased, cyber bullying has increased and it changed the way we interact with each other. 2014 is the social media generation. Social Media surrounds us like a blanket. Today's generation does not know or will ever know what life is like without technology or social media.
