Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are only a few of the most common words used in today’s language among children, teens and adults. Such words can be described as popular terms related to what many of us know as social media. In today’s culture, many teenagers rely so heavily on the usage of social media that issues once thought to be revolutionary are now taking place offline and online. In fact, several cases of mental addictions, depression and even suicide have all stemmed from the initial usage of sites such as Facebook, which are otherwise socially accepted as a simple means of communicating with “friends.” While social media does have its advantages, it can also be held responsible for several negative events in the lives of today’s teenagers. One main contributor to the extensive growth in social media amongst teens is the increase in production and demand for devices such as iPhones and tablets. Electronic devices such as these allow teens and people of all ages to socialize with others quickly over the internet on social networking sites. Attachment and dependency on these devices has even lead to much of our generation’s social and emotional developmental patterns. While cell phones have been shown to improve certain situations in emergencies, they cause anxiety. Recent studies have shown that “people who are anxious and socially insecure use Facebook more… probably because those who are anxious find it easier to communicate via social media than face-to-face” (Fitzgerald, 2012). Therefore, Facebook and other forms of social sites meant to connect and establish a better form of communication are actually doing the opposite they were intended to do: to create and a establish a more stable and effective way of dealing wit... ... middle of paper ... ...y, but at the same time those receiving the image have the ability to screenshot (the act of taking a picture from one’s phone screen), and keep or share that image with others. Sexting in general is a problem that many teens face, and with the use of Snapchat as a form of social netoworking the problem seems to be only growing in severity (Bromfield, 2013). In the end, social networking is the act of expanding one’s social circle by connecting other individuals, specifically in relation with the use of the Internet. It is rather common to find individuals of all ages using social sites to stay in-contact with others. While many can argue that social networking is more beneficial for teens, studies prove that the use of such forms of communication can negatively affect the lives of teens anywhere through its ability to create interpersonal and intrapersonal trials.
This is an exciting time to be a young person in this era. With the advent of mobile phones and growth of social media platforms, it’s not only much easier for the youths to access the media more easily and quickly but also it’s much easier to create or capture content and share it. If you think about the youth of this era, the music that they listen to or the dress that they wear or the way that they talk; there’s a very good chance that he or she has picked it up from Facebook. It might seem from the outside that social media is all about kids updating their statuses or tweeting each other, but in actuality, it’s much more than that. Everyone is aware of everyone’s social activities and it has brought dramatic changes in our lifestyle.
Asur, S., & Huberman (2010) defines social media as “a ubiquitous and important platform used for social networking and content sharing.” For much of today’s youth mobile devices and interactive social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have been ever present in their lives and critical factors in their development. The long-term consequences are yet unclear, but there is no doubt that the advent of social networking has transformed the manner in which students interact with their families and friends, as well as how they utilize established and emerging technologies to navigate the world (Correa, Hinsley, & De Zuniga,
Social media was created with the purpose of aiding the general population to communicate with one another. these platforms have other uses as well, but mainly for communication. However, given handheld and other communication devices that are always connected to the internet, it is becoming increasingly rare for people to make human interactions such as meeting up with people face-to-face. In some cases loneliness, depression, anxiety, low self-esteem and heightened aggression are possible repercussions of spending copious amount of time on the internet. Using social media gives people, more specifically adolescents, exposure to bullying and harassment. According to a study in UK, social platforms such as Facebook is giving cause to anxiety and increased feeling of inadequacy. In this study, half the respondents stated that social media had changed their behaviour, felt less confident in contrast to their online friends’ achieveme...
In Austin McCann's Impact of Social Media on Teens articles he raises that "social networking is turning out to be more than a piece of their reality, its turning into their reality." Teens grumble about always being pushed with homework, however perhaps homework isn't the fundamental wellspring of the anxiety. Ordinary Health magazine expresses that, on insights, a young person who invests more energy open air is for the most part a more content and healthier child. Be that as it may, since 2000, the time adolescents spend outside has diminished altogether bringing on more despondency and heftiness. Not just does it influence wellbeing, social networking denies folks from having an intensive discussion with their youngsters without them checking their telephone. Despite the fact that the constructive outcome of having an online networking profile is to correspond with companions/family, they don't even have the respectability to lift their head and take part in a discussion. Appreciating the easily overlooked details around them turns into a troublesome errand to the normal adolescent when they're excessively caught up with tweeting about it. The repudiating impacts of it goes to demonstrate that social networking is not all it is talked up to
How the social networking influents young people’s psychological well-being? Since the World Wide Web appeared in the world in the year of 1991, the internet has significantly changed people’s life on almost every level. Especially when the social media sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, became popular during the last decade, people’s lifestyles have greatly changed by this form of communication, which consequently brings many psychological effects on the young people. As the result, according to the recent researches, the teenagers and the young adults in this era are bearing many mental health problems, such as depression, anxiety, and addiction, due to the social
in Livsey 1). With their thoughts, common sense, and emotions still developing, adolescents become susceptible to both positive and negative influence, causing them to feel the most significant impact from the consumption of social media. This allows social media to greatly hinder young minds from proper development and diminishes people’s ability to verbally communicate face-to-face, preventing the construction of personal relationships. Social networking creates a feeling of community for teenagers as the term ‘“social networking” is [currently] used to describe the communities built via technologies” (Braun 71). However, few intentional relationships form as people do not connect with one another in a personal manner via online conversation. They rather observe what someone displays online for others to view, not necessarily one’s true self, but one’s best or most popular self. Online networking creates social and psychological issues within teenagers as they become unable to formulate proper relationships, gain a distorted self-image, and expose themselves to the dangers of the internet such as cyber
Social media has been negatively affecting teenagers in numerous ways such as sleeping habits, cyberbullying, and lowering their self-esteem. Teenagers are at a vulnerable age where maintaining a balanced sleep schedule can be critical especially when it comes to their education. Social media is easily accessible in today's society giving these young adolescents a faster/easier way to bully, cyberbullying. Bullying alone could potentially hurt someone, however, now that technology has progressed tremendously it is giving teens a way to bully others in more ways than one. This can cause teens to feel useless or not good enough for themselves or the public eye. No one especially teenagers, being at such a vulnerable sate, should face self-esteem
Social media has taken over the younger generation at a staggering rate. In 2012, 94% of teenagers have reported that they have a Facebook account. They average to have 425 friends as well. (Marketing Land, Greg Sterling p1). These are mind boggling statistics. Social networking has replaced the “face to face” encounters that the generations before had to do if they wanted to talk to their friends or family. Sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have transformed the way we speak or see our friends, family, and a lot of times strangers that we have never met offline. I've come to realize that kids my age are a lot more shy and not as easy to converse with in person as people our parent's or grandparent's age. That could come from talking behind a computer or a cellular device all the time with texts instead of verbally speaking. The impact of social media is putting a negative effect on the younger generation.

From "thintastic" blogs to suicide stories, social media has become not only a source of conversation but a gateway to harmful suggestions that many teenagers see and believe to be allowable, when in fact the situations proposed are dangerous to those who attempt them. Statistics show that 20% of anorexic teenagers will die prematurely, and 80% of teenagers who commit suicide are depressed (South). Social media has glorified and brought to attention eating disorders, depression, and suicide among teens that might otherwise not become a statistic in these critical categories.
