Hairspray and Makeup Five out of seven days of the week Pocatello High School fulfills the typical roll of a high school. Students fidget in the classrooms as they wait for class to be over. The hallways fill with greetings and laughter as teenagers pile out of the classrooms and find their friends. The gymnasium is filled to capacity as basketball fans cheer on their team at the Friday night games. But this high school has a unique responsibility once a year. Dancers, coaches, and judges assemble early in the dance season at this school for the Idaho Classic Dance Competition. The high school takes on a new role as it is used for this competition. Buses pull up to the front of this ancient school just like every other morning. The only difference is the sun is still sleeping behind the mountains and these buses are filled with dance teams ready to compete instead of the regular high school students. The school’s front steps are cracked and little black circles on the concrete show where lazy students have spit out their gum on the ground. Inside the host team, the Pocatello Indianettes, stand ready by a white plastic table waiting to check teams in and lead them to their dressing rooms. Parents and friends head out of the school in search of a close meal while dance teams and coaches head downstairs to the cafeteria. Located next to the boy’s locker room the small lunch room is at the bottom of two flights of stairs. Red pillars support the low ceiling and round tables are quickly claimed by each team. The dancers take the lunch break to relax for a short time between dance categories. Coaches lay out sandwich fixings for their team and the teams grab paper plates and napkins to place their lunches on. When the teams are finished with their lunches they all head back to their assigned rooms to prepare for the second half of the
