Hairspray and Makeup Five out of seven days of the week Pocatello High School fulfills the typical roll of a high school. Students fidget in the classrooms as they wait for class to be over. The hallways fill with greetings and laughter as teenagers pile out of the classrooms and find their friends. The gymnasium is filled to capacity as basketball fans cheer on their team at the Friday night games. But this high school has a unique responsibility once a year. Dancers, coaches, and judges assemble early in the dance season at this school for the Idaho Classic Dance Competition. The high school takes on a new role as it is used for this competition. Buses pull up to the front of this ancient school just like every other morning. The only difference is the sun is still sleeping behind the mountains and these buses are filled with dance teams ready to compete instead of the regular high school students. The school’s front steps are cracked and little black circles on the concrete show where lazy students have spit out their gum on the ground. Inside the host team, the Pocatello Indianettes, stand ready by a white plastic table waiting to check teams in and lead them to their dressing rooms. Parents and friends head out of the school in search of a close meal while dance teams and coaches head downstairs to the cafeteria. Located next to the boy’s locker room the small lunch room is at the bottom of two flights of stairs. Red pillars support the low ceiling and round tables are quickly claimed by each team. The dancers take the lunch break to relax for a short time between dance categories. Coaches lay out sandwich fixings for their team and the teams grab paper plates and napkins to place their lunches on. High school sports can have a tremendous effect on not only those who participate but the members of the community in which they participate. These effects can be positive, but they can also be negative. In the book Friday Night Lights, H.G. Bissinger shows that they are often negative in communities where high school sports “keep the town alive” due to the social pressure. In this way, Friday Night Lights gives insight into the effects of high school football being the backbone of a community, revealing that the fate of the individual football players are inadvertently determined by the actions of the townspeople.
The soccer field is the only place he is able to do this, not at school, not at home, and not in his community. Paul has to leave Lake Windsor to be able to play soccer in Tangerine. The kids in Lake Windsor are snotty, rich, and self-centered. But the kids in Tangerine are hard working, resourceful, and proud. During their first soccer game, Paul described the game as, “The Palmetto players got down and dirty right away, and their fans cheered them on.”
While growing up, I attended a traditional school. This is a schooling method many individuals are probably familiar with. A student attends school for nine months out of the year, and then has a three month break during the summer. However, in my immediate hometown surroundings, nearby traditional schools are assessing the idea of transforming into year-round schools. Year round schooling is one subject debated in high schools, middle schools, and elementary schools nationwide. Are schools that operate 365 days a year academically better than traditional schools? What are the cost differences between the two? How would a year-round school effect families? Changing the schooling technique from traditional to year-round has numerous variables that need to be taken into consideration before any grade school or secondary education institution fully commits. Year-round schooling schedules should not be implemented and traditional schooling calendars should be maintained.
Fight songs from the school band in the gym reverberated through the hallways. The students hooted and hollered as they filled the bleachers. Cheerleaders led the school and a collective refrain of the school’s fight song. Peter stood under one of the basketball hoops with the other teachers and watched as the student organizing the pep rally prepared the tug-of-war and dizzy bat games. The pep rally culminated with a game of knockout between the teachers and students. Beth walked into the gym and stood next to Peter.
The smell of carnival foods, music blasting through the tall speakers, and the crowd going wild is the first thing one hears as one enters the stadium. Shortly, one hears the sounds of clapping, stomping, and yelling as the Greek organizations compete for the grand prize, title of recognition, and bragging rights. People are dancing and supporting their favorite groups as they perform the routines the groups have been practicing for days. The final group performs and walks off stage drained with all the energy they put into the performance. Everyone crosses their fingers hoping their Greek organization won. Different colors, like salmon pink and apple green, surrounds the stadium representing the different groups. The MC (Mic Controller) comes out and tantalized everyone with the final results. Once the results were called out, screams and bantering erupts from the crowd as the crowd is signaled to leave. Everyone leaves and hangs out with friends and their favorite Greek organization. As one sits in the stand, one thinks why they are entertained by such activities. Many overlook the important purposes of joining a sorority. History can only tell why sororities were created and where they originated.
Miami Dade College’s very own dance majors, who were challenged by the artistry of guest choreographers as well as themselves, performed The Art of Dance. Watching this performance truthfully made me question if the dancers in this program were being trained properly to be professional dancers
There is something beautiful about dance, but there is something more beautiful about dancing with others. When a group of 13 girls and 1 boy can come together from 14 different ways of life and move together as one, then a dance team becomes more than just a dance team. This was not something that happened overnight, it took time, effort and about 7 conversations with our coaches about our values. Without all of those components, this team would have never been the successful, fighting, dream team that we became. Explaining what it is like to be a member of the Kelly Kittens, almost like explaining the taste of water, it’s indescribable.
Walking through the classroom observing at what is available; I see a storage area for the students to put their backpacks and jackets right when they are to walk through the door. "C'mon, Chris, you get in the shower first," Taylor ordered from the other bed. "You're already up." Chris conceded and worked his way to the shower. Everyone in the room knew it too, due to his grunting and whining under his breath. Soon enough he was out of the shower and so were Taylor, Anders, and I. We ate breakfast with the rest of the team downstairs in the hotel in silence. It was too early to talk or chat. Everyone knew that one thing was going to be on their minds: winning. It was not worth discussing, either. Everyone knew that our varsity eight was possibly the strongest that McCallie had ever had, and that we had a good chance of winning some gold medals that day, if not a great chance. We loaded on the bus like ants, noiselessly flowing into one little opening. The bus ride was silent all of the way over as well. Everyone's heads, looking intently forward, were slightly jostling along with the bumps in the road. Some tried to sleep, but the tension and excitement was too much for most of them to be successful.
As I entered the building which housed the rink, the warm, nostalgic scent of popcorn hit that part of my brain where dusty, cobwebbed memories live, memories of my own adolescence. I made my way past a group of exuberant teenagers at the snack bar until I reached the skating rink. Skinny, hard benches, made for small butts, lined one wall. I took a seat and scanned the rink. My eyes paused to read a sign; white, block letters on a black background warned, "Skate at Your Own Risk."
The wind blew into our faces, colorful leaves flying about. The temperature dropped and we were quivering, teeth clicking. Oh boy, we did not want to perform that Friday night. There are many decisions for parents to choose private or public school for their kids. Every parent wants what is best for his or her child. A person's education is one of the most important aspects in determining whether or not they will become a productive member of society. Education is so important. We need to look at both public and private schools to find out if there is a difference. Private schools are a better choice than public school for many reasons. Private encourages strong quality teaching, encourages higher education learning, and inhibit the rampant of bullying.
