Recommended: Benefits of pet adoption essay

Every year in the United States, 2.7 million animals are euthanized, 1.2 million of those being dogs. There are tens of reasons why dogs may end up in shelters and/or pounds, however one of the leading causes is breeders. Breeders make their money by producing purebreds dogs and selling them. This type of business encourages the mass breeding of animals, in order to make profit. With the high numbers of dogs already in pounds and shelters, breeders are only adding the problem and decreasing the dog's’ chances of being adopted before they are put down. For this reason as well as others, I believe it is more fitting to adopt dogs from shelters, rather than from breeders. To begin, one of the many reasons why dogs should be adopted from shelters

As well, the puppies are removed from their mothers when they are only about 7 weeks old. Then, ten or more puppies are crammed in a small cage to be transported causing the puppies to be scared and have many illnesses or conditions caused by neglect and stress (Puppy Mills, Pet Shops, and the AKC Basic Facts 6). When the puppies are 7 weeks old, they should be with their mother and their littermates. The puppies are still learning at 7 weeks old and they miss out.
