Throughout the whole book, Don’t Shoot: One Man, a Street Fellowship, and The End of Violence in Inner-City America David M. Kennedy uses multiple steps to implement Project Ceasefire and tries to make it work. If the chief of police approached me and asked how to implement Project Ceasefire I would follow these steps: selecting a target behavior analyzing the dynamics of local gun violence, assembling an interagency working group of largely line-level criminal justice and other agencies that were going to be involved, communicate with the targeted group, developing a strategy designed to have an impact on youth homicide and create a strong deterrent to violence, following up with the strategy and see if the behavior was controlled. Desert Storm was a part of the Gulf War, Desert Storm was a codenamed Operation to get Iraq soldiers out of Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. This was the first foreign crisis that the U.S. got involved in since the Cold war. It was because of saddam Hussein. Saddam ordered his Iraqi army to cross the border to Kuwait. This wasn’t some random attack by Iraq. but instead Iraq had been preparing for this for years, they knew what they were doing and were heavily equipped with weapons.
This may alienate those who do not become emotionally involved and are in search of a physical way to decrease shootings and bombings. An optimistic plan to salvage America’s morality by working through one person at a time is well-meant but not the meaty plan of action many may desire.
When help presented itself, many of the people at least made an effort to change and realize that violence was not the answer. The amount of people that are shot and killed in Chicago is a surprising number. Many of the violence does not come from someone necessarily being a bad person, but someone who is unwilling to back down from any situation (Kotlowitz, 2012). In Chicago many believe that “death before dishonor” is a good motto to live life by (Kotlowitz, 2012). The funerals that people attend are just a reminder to them, that one day the way they live their lives on the street will catch up to them (Kotlowitz, 2012). The violence interrupters are working hard in Chicago to help the people in the society, but if people do not want to change it is hard to make a difference (Kotlowitz, 2012). The people in Chicago also have to put in the work to make the community a better place, so that they feel safe leaving their houses instead of feeling like “every time [they] go outside somebody is going to get killed” (Kotlowitz,
This paper is a perspective on the military actions that took place on October 1983 during President Ronald Reagan’s administration; this conflict was named Operation Urgent Fury. First we must understand why relations between Grenada and the United States began to deteriorate and understand the communist influence that Cuba and The Soviet Union had in Grenada. The threat posed by the anti-US Marxists to the nearly six hundred American students that lived on Grenada was a danger that we could not allow. The US had a aid the islands in the Caribbean that would be threaten by a communist hold in that area but we had to react immediately and almost to perfection in order to be successful.
On March 18, 2003, Coalition forces would launch the initial attacks on Saddam Hussein’s Iraq. A full invasion of the country followed, and Hussein was overthrown from power. While the end of Hussein’s oppressive reign was considered a victory for many of the Iraqi people, the Sunnis of the Ba’ath Party refused to accept his demise. Although the Sunnis were in the minority, the city of Fallujah would remain home to many of the Ba’ath Party supporters. On March 31, 2004, almost a year to date from the end of Hussein’s reign, four American Blackwater contactors working in Fallujah were attacked, brutally beaten, burned and dismembered by a group of Iraqi insurgents. Two of the bodies were hung from a bridge for all of the citizens of Fallujah to see, and a mob style celebration took place in the city. The highly publicized incident would be the igniter for the First Battle of Fallujah, known as Operation Vigilant Resolve. On May 1, 2004, the battle would end with the withdrawal of U.S. troops from the city and control being turned over to the newly formed Fallujah Brigade. The mission as a whole was a failure, and the shortcomings of Operation Vigilant Resolve were ultimately a demonstration of the underestimation of the power, size, efficiency, organization and control that the Insurgent Forces had in Iraq as well as the lack of a consistent strategic plan from the American forces.
Gun violence in youth has become much more prevalent. Today’s youth are more likely to turn to guns to solve their problems with bullies or to help them to fight a mental illness. Kids are taking guns from their parents or are just going to the streets and buying the guns from random people. Although there are jurisdictions that have started to use gun violence programs to help combat these issues the programs are not found everywhere and are not going to work forever. One such program that we will learn about later on is Operation Ceasefire.
Chicago should continue to fund ceasefire and they should also expand to other places. Where they are affected as much or more than Chicago for example Detroit. There must be more people like that want to get out of the gang life, but just need a direction to be pointed at to start. Even artist that have been in the gang life might help fund the project or even help in the group. They are making a difference because people in the hood don’t respect the police as much as ceasefire people. At least they listen to them, they may not trust the police as much because of all the news in the
The dramatic increase of gun violence in Chicago has many questioning the effectiveness of state policies and police tactics. For many Chicagoans, gun violence is a common occurrence and this would not be the first time in which a big spike has been observed. In fact, Chicago was doing well overall in each crime category until recently in 2016, when they ended the year with 762 homicides victims that were gun related. Towards the end of 2016, Rahm Emanuel, mayor of Chicago, had a press conference with the communities at the Malcom X College. He goes into detail of how he hopes to see a sharp decline on the heavy issue of gun violence surrounding their city. In Shane’s article he mentioned that to attaining realistic results, teams would have to join resources in order to achieve it (Shane, 2004). For crime to be reduced relentless follow-up and assessment should be done. It encourages progressive review of the department to ensure reduction in crime patterns; annual meeting are held to review statistics and crime reports. This meeting ensures that departments, commanders, supervisors and patrol officers are executing effective strategies and proper use of resources.
From past, present, to future, conflict has defined history. In a world full of battles, revolutions, and seemingly random acts of evil, it is impossible to escape the reality of it all. Many of today’s great classics have been inspired by generations of conflict. Using World War II as the background for John Knowles’ novel A Separate Peace brings up the question if it is ever possible to live in a world without fear, hate and ultimately inevitable conflict. Knowles uses contrasting characters, the innate nature of humans, and contradictory symbols in order to reflect that conflict is inevitable.
Operation Just Cause In 1988 relations with Panama and the U.S. Deteriorated. The. The commander of Southern Command, Gen. Frederick F. Woerner increased the number and strength of U.S. forces in Panama. This was in hopes of deterring the dictator, Noriega, from attacking U.S. citizens or the Panama Canal.
However, how a community goes about dealing with this issue is controversial. According to the Office of Justice Programs, Operation Ceasefire “seeks to reduce gang violence, illegal gun possession, and gun violence in communities.” Officials for Operation Ceasefire advocate for local law enforcement to vamp up patrols in areas where violent crime is common. However, this could be an unintended consequence for those who live in these areas that don’t engage in violence. Essentially, maybe individuals in the community will not like the increased police patrols and will retaliate in a deviant manner. Also, it is important to understand that not all individuals get “chosen” to be part of Operation Ceasefire. Maybe those who don’t pass the screening process to partake will act out. In other words, when they see their friends partaking in the intervention and doing well, those who don’t get chosen may respond in a deviant manner. The Importance of the Marching Season to the Peace Process Every July, Orange Order marches take place to commemorate the Battle of The Boyne of 1690. Since the beginning of ‘The Troubles’ in 1969, the sectarian divide, essentially in the geographical areas of Northern Ireland, has become synonymous with the hopes and fears of the two ideologies yet who still remain poles apart. Parades and marches by the respective sides, reinforce this confrontation. The marches have often been a flashpoint for violence and have been a continual cause of tension between the unionists and the nationalists.
“The trouble is that a praise worthy quest for precision can descend into a flattering of tidy minds at the cost of a realistic grasp of the complexity and interconnectedness that is the story of strategic history.” Colin Gray warns in the opening sentences of the chapter “Irregular Warfare and Terrorism” in his book Another Bloody Century of the dangers of oversimplifying the categories of warfare. To look at warfare as either regular or irregular without being absolutely clear on the definitions of each and the context in which the terms are used is fruitless. Regular forces have been known to use irregular type tactics just as irregular forces have used conventional warfare to reach their political goals. It is imperative then, that the U.S. military forces are trained to fight wars falling on a spectrum of warfare and educated to distinguish the type of war they face. In order to protect national security interests as outlined in the 2014 Quadrennial Defense Review, the U.S. armed forces must rebalance and be capable of conducting operations across the spectrum of conflict in order to win against both a regular and irregular adversary, combating a wide scope of tactics and strategies ranging from terror tactics to full scale, multi-phased conflict against a peer or near peer by maximizing the capability of the force and nation.
