Living creatures of all species in their most natural state have one purpose: to survive. Humans are certainly no exception to this rule. However, human kind has a unique trait that acts as a means for survival even in the face of great adversity; the human spirit. Humans have a natural inclination to survive, but the higher component of human nature uses that inclination to help humans survive (whether it be emotionally, physically, or both) even the most tragic of situations. The finest example of this proclivity for survival can be seen in the literature from World Wars I and II. Much of the writing from this period exhibits narratives, both non-fiction and derivative, that demonstrate the human spirit’s desire and ability to survive in any conditions.
This propensity for survival does not necessarily manifest itself in the most positive ways in some cases. In fact, the human will to live can, in extreme situations, override a person’s conscience and guilt. In Arthur Miller’s Incident at Vichy, several of the characters experience this phenomenon. Marchand, for example, buys his freedom and therefore his survival without showing any empathy for his peers unable to do this themselves. Each person has the fundamental intent of ultimate survival. When that survival is tested, it is the human spirit that allows people to fight in all conditions. While the spirit is not always successful in garnering that survival, it always tries in some way. It is not always easy to know how one will react when put in a life-threatening situation. But in a period like this, where people everywhere were experience a threat on their lives in some way, it is possible to truly examine the depth at which the inclination to live is embedded. Though it manifests itself uniquely for each person in each situation, it is clear that the human spirit has an insatiable desire to survive in any and all conditions.
