Child labor has been a problem especially for those children living in poverty or those with little to no education. If children become laborers at a young age, they will miss out on education, and all things that make them children, like playing or having family time. With no education, they will be limited to what they can do in society. If parents of children were child laborers, they most likely did not earn a complete education, and are more likely to not earn a higher salary. Because of that, it is more likely that their children will become child laborers, beginning a cycle of child labor. It is important to China that their children have a good childhood. Around in the 1900s, the problem was bad. However, it has slowly come back, although it is now not as bad as it was before. Around the late 1900s, the Chinese government started new schools. Lack of education is a key factor in child labor because without education, children may not know what to look out for, or what is a good or bad situation. If their parents did not receive that kind of education, they also may not know that it is not good to send their children to work. So, it was thought that if more schools were put into place, then child labor would decrease. This worked for the time being, but now the problem is beginning to come back. According to The World Bank, the number of people that finish secondary school in China is 98%, meaning that most children now get an education through the age of 18. In 1978, China signed the ILO (International Labor Organization) Minimum Age Convention, as well as the ILO Worst Forms of Child Labor Convention of 1999. The ILO Worst Forms of Child Labor Convention means that a country must take immediate action on preventing child labor. China also signed the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1990, and ratified it. The U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child points out the civil, political social, cultural, and economic rights of children. China has helped prevent child labor because of these conventions, and if more like these come, then child labor can come to an end quicker.
