However, because they let their feelings and religion overpower them they do more harm to the deviants than the deviants do to them even though they claim the deviants to be harmful and violent. I chose to analyze this quote because it shows how in the Land of Fringes people do not believe that the crosses on their dress helps them unlike the people in Waknuk. And it marks Petra and Rosalind as people who are against deviants because those crosses are suppose to protect them from deviants as the land of Fringes is the place where deviants from other towns are sent. Secondly, this quote is significant because Petra and Rosalind realize that their society has tried to brainwash them thinking a cross, representing God can protect themselves against deviants. However, their society classifies them as deviants making the cross useless and another way of indoctrinating people. it shows why the Fringes resent this cross as they were sent away for being deviants even though the cross is suppose to protect them against becoming a deviant.
