The controversy of pit bulls has been active for many decades. Many say that pit bulls and breeds alike are a danger to society. Disregarding past breeding experiences, pit bulls and such breeds have been bred to interact well with humans and for companionship. The Staffie Bull has been identified as the “Nanny Dog” because of their nurturing behavior toward children. Certain dog breeds should not be banned because danger is not determined by the breed and many dogs are people-oriented; however opponents feel that certain dog breeds are unsafe. Moreover possible solutions to this issue are to diminish the dog laws, provide information on all dog breeds, and teach people how to properly train their dogs.

They are a part of many organizations to serve and help people in various amounts of ways. Dogs provide assistance in law enforcement, work as service dogs, are therapeutic, psychological role, etc. For example, the Pit Bull Rescue Central mentions, “Pit bulls still loyally serve society in many roles: search and rescue, therapy dogs visiting hospitals and senior communities, working in law enforcement as narcotics and bomb detection dogs, educational dogs teaching children about canine safety, and service dogs.” This illustrates that dogs are a huge part of our society and make our lives easier in one way or another. Many nursing homes and hospitals use different dog breeds including pit bulls to make their patients feel comfortable and to provide affection as well. For instance, the European Pet Food Industry states, “Pet animals are used for therapeutic reasons in hospitals and nursing homes where the benefits are increasingly being recognized... Perhaps of all these positive effects on the well-being of a human patient, the most dramatic is that of a dog or a cat in the non- communicative clinically depressed patient whose withdrawal can be gently alleviated by the introduction of the pet. Pit bulls and breeds similar to them can be a danger to people and other animals. Any type of dog breed bites, but pit bulls are known for their breed traits, jaw strength, and deadly bite. There have been reviews on the how many people were treated in the emergency due to dog bites injuries. Kaye et al. (2009) mentions, “Five hundred fifty-one patients aged 5 months to 18 years were treated in the emergency department after suffering dog bite injuries during the study period... The most common breeds included pit bull terriers (50.9 percent), Rottweilers (8.9 percent), and mixed breeds of the two aforementioned breeds (6 percent).” This shows that pit bulls and other comparable breeds are unsafe around people and shouldn’t be around babies. Most dogs tend to bite children due to the fact that they are the most playful and aggressive with dogs causing the dogs to react with a bite. Kaye et al. (2009) reveals, “Grade school–aged children (6 to 12 years) constituted the majority of victims (51 percent), followed by preschoolers (2 to 5 years; 24.0 percent), teenagers (13 to 18 years; 20.5 percent), and infants (birth to 1 year; 4.5 percent).” These statistics show that children are very prone to dog bites especially at the young ages ranging from 6 to 12. Perhaps the reason why pit bulls are feared by society is because we are afraid of what they are associated with. Pit bulls are often thought of as a gangster’s pet, a role in violent and illegal activities. People stereotype this breed because of the unfortunate acts of few. In contrast, society needs to understand that they are being racist towards a breed of dog. Denver’s systematic killing of pit bulls could be compared to the actions of the Nazis during the Holocaust.

The debate puts millions of pit bull owners up against a relatively small group of activists against the breed and challenges the notion that Pit Bulls that are well-cared for had any history of aggressive behavior in the first place, closing the argument by again stating what the Canadian Encyclopedia explained, that their actions were just a park of the cycle of favorites and least favorites that has always been and always will be in the history of ownership of dogs.
Media over exposes anything that has a negative effect on the pit bull breeds. It is their goal to adversely affect said breeds. These atrocious opinions of reporters distort the views of the public, making them think that one breed is a monstrous threat to society and needs to be banned. Breed specific legislation is unlawful and should be prohibited.

Even though pit bulls are the majority of dog attacks anybody hears about, they are loyal and caring dogs. All they want is the love and approval of their owners. They will do anything that they are told to do. Their strength, stamina, and speed fuel the passion they have for their owners. Pit bulls are not vicious by nature; they are good guard dogs fueled by the love for their family; and, they are definitely loyal friends. They have a lower temperament than many other well-known breeds; therefore, they are not vicious by nature at all. They are very strong guard dogs. Pit bulls are known to be a scary breed, so people stay away from them. They have an amazing amount of speed and stamina that they can use to chase predators away, too. Pit bulls are the best friends anyone could ask for. They are loyal and loving creatures that just want to please their family. They are good dogs to train to be around children. An increasing number of pit bull attacks have occurred over past decade. People who are attacked by pit bulls always suffer serious injuries because of the pit bulls’ sharp teeth and strong muscles. In October 19, 2009, Dr Hugh Wirth who is the RSPCA’s Victorian president renewed calls for American pit bull terriers to be bred out of Australia. The current laws require owners of pit bulls to register their pit bull. While some people are satisfied with the laws because they think that they are safe, others disagree. From my own perspective, the laws should be improved. The government should ban these fierce dogs and wipe them out instead of just registering them. In my opinion, there are three reasons why I am in favour of Dr Wirth’s proposal.

Currently, pit bulls have been reported by the media with very horrific and disturbing news of having attacked a child or being shot by a police due to aggression while some are reported to have been abused or neglected by its owners (Forderer and Unkelbach 534). And because the reports keep coming with heated discussions, more and more people have forged a frightening image of pit bulls even to the extreme of refusing to take care of such breed. Pit bull advocates claim that the dogs get a bad reputation considering that people should learn the dogs are not inherently aggressive. What the pit bull advocates would like to point is that the owners of the pit bulls should be considered guilty for mishandling of their own dogs. There are owners of pit bulls that even encourage the dog to be aggressive in order to fight and protect them in a wrong manner and wrong degree of training (Forderer and Unkelbach 536). Pit bull advocates claimed that a well socialized and well trained pit bull would be very intelligent and could be one of the gentle dogs imaginable.
