Annie Sjostrom Hollingsworth English Comp I May 12, 2014 Pit Bulls Pit Bulls are without a doubt my favorite dog, I adore them. Pit Bulls are very well tempered, loyal, and resilient animals. Bred for big game hunting, Pit Bulls are strong, fierce animals and people who have the wrong intentions for ownership should never own them. I am a strong believer that a potential pet owner should do lots of research before getting any type of animal, without exception. Owners should do as much research before getting a dog as they do in planning for a new home or any other new family member. One of the main things to really think about and understand is your intentions for your selection of an animal with the breeding of the Pit Bull. If you choose a dog with the wrong intentions, specifically a Pit Bull, you will get a dog that behaves aggressively and is dangerous. This owner behavior is what has caused the current plight of the Pit Bull today, where laws have been passed in thirteen states and hundreds of municipalities, as well as every U. S. Military base, banning the ownership of the breed and forcing shelters to euphonize Pit Bulls within 24 hours. These laws are unjust and cruel, and victimize the breed based on the owners’ behavior. I also argue that the blame for the epidemic proportions that the laws have reached is 100% the fault of owners who purposely acquired the Pit Bull with the intention to abuse and fight the dogs, and that these owners are the ones who should be punished, not the dogs. (Davis) I have been around many different dogs from a young age and have grown to adore the Pit Bull over the years more than any other dog in my lifetime. I own one currently. Sjo is an 80 pound Pit Bull just over a year old. Ha... ... middle of paper ... ...ociated Press published an article “Pit Bulls are A Danger to Society,” yet this year, the same publisher issued an article “Attitudes and Laws Against the Pit Bull Soften – The Big Story” in which the Pit bull advocates hail the changes as recognition that breed-specific laws discriminate against dogs that are not inherently aggressive or dangerous should not be discriminated against or victimized. The debate puts millions of pit bull owners up against a relatively small group of activists against the breed and challenges the notion that Pit Bulls that are well-cared for had any history of aggressive behavior in the first place, closing the argument by again stating what the Canadian Encyclopedia explained, that their actions were just a park of the cycle of favorites and least favorites that has always been and always will be in the history of ownership of dogs.
Perhaps the reason why pit bulls are feared by society is because we are afraid of what they are associated with. Pit bulls are often thought of as a gangster’s pet, a role in violent and illegal activities. People stereotype this breed because of the unfortunate acts of few. In contrast, society needs to understand that they are being racist towards a breed of dog. Denver’s systematic killing of pit bulls could be compared to the actions of the Nazis during the Holocaust.
Just the sight of a pit bull instills apprehension and even fear in some people, who believe the dog may attack them for no reason and not let go. Many communities have placed this ostracized breed under severe restrictions; some municipalities have implemented bans outlawing ownership of the breed. Today’s society regards the pit bull as the most vicious and unpredictable of all dog breeds, whereas admirers of the pit bull believe this misconception stems from irresponsible owners and the inflammatory and negative publicity concerning this breed.
I believe that all people should be allowed to have any type of dog that they want. It’s just odd how people think that pit bulls are dangerous or vicious.
Are all pit bulls subjected to the life of gangs or forced into a fighting ring? No, but it is the dogs that are and have become violent because of their mistreatment that get in the media which leads to the public fearing all pit bulls. There are often cases of apartment buildings, rental homes or even whole towns banning the breeds without question. A case that is reaching media today is in Moreauville Louisiana, the town passed a ban that originally stated that everyone who owned a Pitt bull (or Rottweiler) had to get rid of their animals before the first of December or the “vicious” animals will be confiscated for "further disposition” and the owners will be forced to pay a fine. One of the dogs who is in danger from this ban is Zeus, a pitt bull who acts as a therapy dog for his owner O’Hera Owens who has severe neck problems that leave her in a brace and wheel chair. (Greenquist) Zeus is a loving member of his family who is being discriminated against just for his breed. Is it fair for a family to lose someone they love just because of how other dogs have acted? Or how the monster’s at the ends of their leashes forced them to act? Zeus is a prime example of two things, one that bans are doing more harm than good and that with the right upbringing pitt bulls can be sweet and loving animals once given the chance. However not all pitts even get that chance to have a loving home like Zeus – shelters across the country are full of Pit bull terriers who need homes but rarely get them because of their
Why do people think Pit bulls are a bad breed? There are tons of facts about the breed. There’s also some good history about the breed. Where did he pit bull breed come from? Why did the Pitbull get the nickname the nanny dog? Did the breed help in battles? What are some reason they don’t allow this breed in certain towns? Why ban the breed? Pit bulls have great characteristics for the dog. This breed has a good nature. So here are some facts about the breed.
They can be very large powerful breed that if taught or neglected can cause very serious damage. Pit Bulls are one of the most misunderstood dogs. They can look very aggressive when barking however be very tame and docile. This once used for fighting breed has gotten the label of the most dangerous breed label. While pit Bulls were once used to protect their children are now feared. There is a problem with dogs biting but it is not breed specific. Awareness about the breed will help save lives. Hundreds of Pit Bulls are put down every month. Pit Bulls have the highest euthanasia rate among dogs. Part of the problem is there are too many irresponsible owners that do not spay or neuter their Pit Bulls and then the puppies end up in shelters. Due to the misconception of Pit Bulls and the laws the puppies are immediately euthanized. The Pit Bull laws have shown that they are not effective in cutting down of the number of bites. This shows how it isn’t the breed but the owners that neglect and force Pit Bulls to be vicious. There are too many Pit Bulls being put down for no real reason. These dogs are misjudged for their ferocious reputation. Owners that have mistreated and abused Pit Bulls made them fight each other have done a disservice towards the breed. Laws that protect abused and neglected dogs need to be stricter and enforced so that powerful breeds don’t harm innocent people. Today’s society judges pit bulls on what they have read, seen on television and seen on the internet. Pit Bulls have the same instincts that any other breed has. Chasing squirrels, protecting or attacking when felt threatened, just like a Chihuahua would. Laws that required training of the dog and owners would be beneficial to all parties involved. There are still going to be the owners that do not follow the laws however they are the same owners that treat their pit bulls inhumanely. There has always been a breed that is most feared but this is
One known thing about Pits are that they are called the nanny dogs because of their love for children. These dogs are also used for therapy dogs because they have excellent temperaments. They are used for rescue work and protecting work because of their higher pain tolerance and durability. One article about Pit Bulls states, “Dogs not breed or trained for dog fighting usually display defeat in combat by rolling over and exposing a light underside”(Gladwell, 2016). That shows submissiveness and understanding about who the top dog or owner is. This also proves that it’s how you train and treat your Pit Bull. If you raise your dog aggressively or even play with him aggressively, no doubt the dog will show later signs of aggressiveness. That goes for any dog. It also shows that you have to be careful. Some Pits have been raised fighting and that’s all they know. You must be kind and understand the history of your pet. But all in all, these are great dogs. In over 28 States, Pit Bulls are ranked favorite
Pit bulls and several other breeds of dogs that are thought to be overly aggressive and violent are being banned in cities and towns. Are pit bulls a dangerous breed or are they just like any other dog? Many people believe that they are in fact dangerous and aggressive by nature but this is not true. Pitt bulls are being falsely accused for being a violent breed and because of the negative aspects associated with the breed, such as dog fights and vicious attacks, they are being unfairly targeted in breed specific bans.
Pit bulls have been known as “the pet” for drug dealers, and other bad people. They have been known to be “the pet” for those people because of the fact that they attack people and other animals. Bruce Goodwin once said,” You can say all you want about these other breeds, but ‘pit bulls’ are the choice for drug dealers and other bad folks for a reason.” If you want to keep people safe, a ban on pit bulls is the best idea.
Only this Pitbull is not “mean,” this dog has never hurt a human or another animal in her life; she is great with children and loves to snuggle on the couch with her owners. Several days after the boy’s death, details leading up to the attack quietly emerged on the back pages of local newspapers. The “family dog” actually belonged to someone else; a neighborhood teenager had stolen the male pit bull a month earlier from its owner’s backyard. There was speculation that the teen may have abused the pit bull in hopes of “turn[ing] him into a fighting dog.”
Pit-Bulls are being banned from almost every state because they are seen as violent hostile dogs. Which they are not any dog you have can be turned into an aggressive dog not just Pit-Bulls. A Pit-bull is a dog of an American variety of bull terriers, noted for its muscular build and often associated with ferocity. The talk about banning pit-bulls started in 1986. The banning of pit-bulls should be stopped. How can you just up and ban one type of bread of dog because of how people make them out to be. There are more violent dogs out in the world besides pit bulls. If they want to punish someone they should punish the people who turn these dogs into such monsters.
I. Do you have a dog? Does anyone have a pit bull? Well I happy to say that I am a proud owner of 2 blue pits. Their names are Diamond and Jack, and I never been more in love with dog. They are just like my babies. At the end of the summer Diamond had her first litter. I was in awe’s because I was like I’m a grandmother now. They are more than
First, we have the locking jaw myth, Pit bulls do not actually have a locking jaw(Chako, 2015). If one was to compare a Pit bulls skull to that of another breed, they would be almost identical. People think that Pits have a locking jaw because they are so determined to not let go sometimes. Second, we have the myth that they are inherently vicious(Rock, 2015). This most certainly is not true. Dog behaviors, such as viciousness, are a result of bad training, not inheritance. Just because one dog is trained to be vicious does not mean that its entire breed is vicious. The third myth is that dog aggression and people aggression are the same thing. Pit bulls are only people aggressive if they have been trained to be that way, it is not a trait they are born with. These myths are usually brought on by terrible stories of Pit bull attacks. Stories like, a Pit bull guarding a marijuana plant kills a two and a half year old. The two year old was out with its parents and got too close to the plant. We blame the dog because it did what it was trained to do instead of blaming the parents for not watching their child more closely. Stories like this have lead to numerous breed specific bans throughout the country. In Tijeras, New Mexico has one of the toughest bans. They may seize a dog and destroy it without
The world seems to believe that the American Pit Bull Terrier is a vicious breed of dog, violent and ruthless by nature, and that they should be treated as such. However, what if this stereotype about the pit bull that modern society bases their opinions off of, is an improper representation of the breed? The pit bull faces much hatred and neglect in this day and age, but in their prime, the pit bull was considered to be the perfect dog. Although bred for physique and stature that was perfect in the dog-fighting world, the pit bull grew in popularity and became high demand as a man’s best friend. However, that reputation that once made the pit bull one of the most popular and iconic breeds of dog, seems to have been forgotten over the years, and replaced with the idea that they are ruthless attack dogs bred to kill. This stereotype and the specifics that go along with it have brought the name of the pit bull down to it’s knees, making the breed vulnerable to neglect, abuse, violence and many other awful acts that are deemed inhumane, but seem to go unnoticed and unreported because of the breed that is subject to these despicable acts. What if all the incidents and accidents and attacks you hear and read about in the news are only snippets of the true story? What if the breed is nothing like the monsters many believe they are?
They say they see pit bulls are overly dangerous and overly abused by humans. They say that pitbulls , account for 75% of canine-inflicted human deaths. It is undisputed that pit bulls are the most abused dog. They are nurtured for the specific purpose of violence, the dogs are treated cruelly to make them as dangerous as possible, and are mostly abandoned when they are not vicious enough for their devilish
