My intent for this paper was to research how one obtains a pharmaceutical degree at the University of Michigan, the steps it takes, and how one can find a career with that level of education
The amount of schooling it takes to be a Doctor of Pharmacy is very great compared to just getting a bachelor's degree in a common subject. A lot of people tend to undermine how much work is put into the pharmacy practice, but it takes many years of college and mountains of dedication. I have always wondered where pharmacy came from and who really put in the time to “invent” such a practice, in this paper the invention, construction, and the origin of pharmaceutical vocation will be identified, as well as how one goes about obtaining a degree in pharmacy and how one may obtain a job with such degree.
Some may ask what drove me to select this topic over any other option. My answer is simply drugs, medications, math and science Each one of these topics highly interest me and you need those interest to obtain the degree. Once I get to college I want to embark on the journey of earning this degree so that in the future I will be able to get a job in a pharmacy, as a pharmacist. Pharmacies have always appealed to me because of all the different drugs that lie within them, little tiny tablets that help people to feel better and live normal lives, which is absolutely astounding.
Using my time wisely, I researched several of the top College of Pharmacies in the United States to decide which college was the best to focus on getting a degree at. Without financial aid going to school to become a pharmacist could cost you up to one hundred and forty thousand dollars which is a great amount for any middle class citizen. Although the students that gain entry at a graduate level can apply for federal loans and also work study, which helps to find part time jobs for students receiving financial aid.
The key to beginning a career in pharmacy is based on ability and motivation, one has to have the ability to do certain tasks while also having the motivation to get the schooling aspect completed. One way to view ability early in one's journey to become a Doctor of Pharmacy is by looking at their transcript from high school, these grades can foreshadow what type of grades they will receive in the future. What really attracts someone to a career is a personal relationship in some cases.
I am pleased to write in support of Ms. Ariana Salva, an undergraduate biochemistry major, to your Pharmacy program. I know Ms. Salva from her academic accomplishments in my organic chemistry courses at California State University Dominguez Hills. Over the year of Ariana’s coursework, I have noted her consistent academic aptitudes. Ms. Salva has shown an independence and self-motivation throughout the time I have known her, yet through laboratory work, she possesses very strong interpersonal skills amongst her peers.
The geriatric population is rapidly growing as individuals continue to benefit from medical advances and pharmaceutical treatments. A large number of this population will need to take some form of medication to maintain a functional lifestyle. Multiple medications can affect the elderly population differently than younger generations. This paper will discuss how polypharmacy impacts geriatrics and the will focus specifically on analgesics and antihistamines. It will also examine demographic factors, changes within the aging body, prescription and nonprescriptive medications, and the role of the nurse practitioner when caring for these patients.
My professional background includes three summers working at a credit union, and the time I have spent job shadowing, both of which are valuable. They will help me by giving me a starting point to build my professional career. Work experience is valuable because it allows me to see how things work with jobs in the “real world” and prepare me for my future after graduation. The job shadows I have done will help me decide what exactly I would like to do upon my graduation. I hope all of my ideas point you towards the same conclusion I have made: I would make a great pharmacist someday and pursuing this degree is a major step in getting there.
Throughout history disease has run rampant taking many lives with every passing day. Finding a cure or even just a tool in the battle has been the main focus of scientist throughout time. This focus is what brought us the discovery of antibiotics. Over the years antibiotics have been misused by patients, over prescribed by physicians and have led to resistant strains of bacteria.
ANTIBIOTICS :- Antibiotics are medicines that fight bacteria. Antibiotics can save lives, if used properly. Antibiotics either kill bacteria or keep them from multiplying. Antibiotics do not fight virus infections. For example: Cold Flu ANTIBIOTICS: Most coughs Sore throats (Exception: strep throats).
. Many doctors and patients are unaware that antibiotics are designed to treat bacterial infections, not viral infections (Antibiotic resistance, N.D.). Many bacteria within our bodies are not harmful at all, and some of them actually provide health benefits. The bacteria that are harmful are disease-causing bacteria, which generate sicknesses such as strep throat, the common cold, and ear infections (Get, 2013). Viruses are smaller than bacteria and require hosts, such as plants or animals, in order to proliferate (What, N.D.). Doctors play a vital role in administering antibiotics, for patients rely on their knowledge and expertise in order to receive proper medication for ailments throughout their lives. According to www.acponline.org, 190 million doses of antibiotics are administered every day. Among patients that do not reside in hospitals, doctors prescribe more than 133 million antibiotic programs every year. Of those 133 million programs, it is estimated that over 50 percent of them are unnecessarily prescribed because the doctor is prescribing them for viral infections such as common colds or simple coughs (Antibiotic resistance, N.D.). However, doctors are not the only ones to blame in regard to misuse of antibiotics because their patients are just as guilty when it comes to ignorance in respect to antibiotic usage. Many preventable factors have emerged because of irresponsibility of patients, including self-medication practices and the temptations of cheap, counterfeit drugs, all of which have aggravated drug resistance in the last 20 years (What, N.D.). Webster’s dictionary defines polypharmacy as the practice of administering or using multiple medications. Polypharmacy is seen often in older adults, because they often have multiple doctors that may not communicate resulting in the over medication of the patient. Then the doctors begin to treat the adverse effects of medications they did not know the patient was even prescribed for example if a patient is prescribed a medication to lower their blood pressure from a cardiac doctor the patient may return to their family care doctor with a blood pressure that is too low. The family care doctor may prescribe a medication that will raise their blood pressure, now the patient will be taking two medications that have opposing affects. Another effect

Since my early schooling days, science and mathematics have always fascinated me given that all components of the world are explained on the basis of these disciplines. In this regard, Pharmacy which is based on Chemistry and Mathematics has interested me a great deal as it has direct impacts on our daily lives. The more I have become familiar with the chemistry and mathematics knowledge involved in pharmacy, the more I have appreciated its significance in improving the lives of people in the community. Out of the many careers that one would opt to pursue, Pharmacy has stood out as the career that will enable me serve the society more directly and have a real impact in the quality of peoples’ lives by touching their health. In addition, I love a career that is challenging and one that I will be involved in even in old age. In this case, Pharmacy offers me this opportunity. My interest in Pharmacy has also developed from my personal health experiences and becoming aware of its expansiveness. Every time I have had to take medicine to cure an illness, I have become more interested to know how drugs are made and how the drug components work in the human body to alleviate pain and restore health. I desire to pursue a career in Pharmacy so as to gain practical experience in these aspects of research.
According to Dr. Robert Zebroski, a professor at the St. Louis College of Pharmacy, King James I established Western society’s first independent pharmacist guild in England during the early 17th century. Pharmacies were known as “apothecaries” back then and they would prepare and dispense medication or remedies and offer medical advice to their patrons (Zebroski). Soon English colonists knew these apothecaries as pharmacist when they traveled to the New World approximately 150 years ago. Zebroski also noted, that Edward Parrish began the American Pharmaceutical Association and “proposed that members of the national professional organization consider all the varied pharmaceutical practitioners ‘pharmacists’ (Zebroski).” The federal government changed the role of pharmacy in 1951 with the passage of the Durham-Humphrey Amendment to the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act of 1938. I pleased to apply to the PharmD program as the program is one area that corresponds to my career dreams. Being part of this program gives one the opportunity to gain an excellent experience in working and collaborating with various health care providers in the ward. But more importantly, it facilitates a practical environment in dealing more closely with patients. Hence, it helps to provide the ultimate health care services to patients. When studying for my Bachelor degree in Pharmacy, I received an interesting exposure to the basics of administration of Pharmaceutical industries which has further fueled my interest in learning the process of Approval from Food and Drug Administration and other laws that regulate Manufacturing, Marketing and advertising of Drugs, Pharmaceuticals and Health care devices to ensure that they are safe and effective. This has inspired me to opt for an MS program in this field and would also provide an intellectual, cultural, ethical understanding and awareness needed to become leaders and innovators in global society.
