Pets, of all different kinds, can offer much more than just companionship. Pets always seem to be there for their owners, especially when they are going through hard times. These animals can do so much more than many think. They are able to contribute to a better physical and mental health of the pet owner. Since working with animals can have a positive on social, mental, and physical effects, people of all ages can benefit from owning a pet.
Many scientists agree that pets are helpful at reducing one’s stress. Just touching an animal can reduce or banish stress. Pets can help to ease one’s anxiety by replacing it with companionship and love. Those who are stressed or frequently worrying, are most likely to become depressed. Since animals can reduce or avoid depression in many people’s lives, it gives them meaning to their life. Pets are a big part of their owner’s lives, since they can add structure and routine to their owner’s day, which is essential to being stress-free. Most pets need to be walked, fed, taken out, or cleaned everyday. Pets can help remove the stress and chaos from a person’s everyday life (Robinson).
Pets have shown to help lower blood pressure caused by stress. Having high blood pressure can lead to heart attacks or result in injury to the brain, eyes, or kidney. The only way to know if someone has high blood pressure is to get their blood checked. High blood pressure does not have any symptoms, meaning that many people do not know they have it. Owning a pet has proven to decrease the risks of high blood pressure. Research shows that owning a pet is more helpful than being on medication for stress-induced blood pressure.
