Did you know petrification is the process by which organic matter exposed to minerals over a long period is turned into a stony substance? Well the same thing happens with myths. For instance, when petrification occurs in a myth the original aspect of the story is changed especially over a length of time. It's as if you're playing the telephone game and a piece of the story continuously changes as it's told from person to person. When the myth is repeated by different people, the details get changed from person to person especially when somebody interprets it differently than the previous person. It also occurred in another popular myth known as "Hercules". Hercules was a child of the Greek gods that was sent down to Earth. When he grew up, he had supernatural strength and was practically a superhero on Earth. Eventually, he went back to the heavens to live with his parents (whom were gods) and the rest of the gods. This story has been adapted throughout the years. For example, in the 90's Disney Studios filmed an animated movie titled "Hercules". Of course, it was about the myth "Hercules". However, Disney changed the story a bit. In the Disney animation, both of Hercules's parents were Greek gods that lived in the heavens amongst the rest of the Greek gods. The original is quite different. First of all, the original myth was titled "Herakles". That's how the Greeks spelled the hero's name. And in the original, Hercules mother was mortal and not a god like in the Disney film. His father was still a Greek god named Zeus just like in the Disney adaptation, but rather than have a child with his goddess he was married to, he had an affair with a mortal woman on Earth named Alcmene. Alcmene conceived Hercules from that affair. Hera, the beautiful goddess Zeus was married to, was so enraged by Zeus having an illegitimate child she sought to destroy Hercules. Although in that case, I would have to say I think it was for the best. The short story was written by Shirley Jackson. It's an amazing short read and has been recognized as such. In this short story, the lottery is basically everyone in the town draw a paper from a box. All of the slips of papers in the box are white and blank with nothing written on it. There's one slip of paper with a black dot and whoever draws that piece of paper gets stoned to death. I do like the different version of lottery we have today. I have to be quite honest. I'm not sure what the moral of the story is in this one. I've read the short story over and over and the only concept I can gather is that the townsfolk had to undergo some type of population control. But I do like how the concept of the lottery has changed over the years. Now when people play the lottery, people are able to win large amounts of
