Have you ever seen that commercial where a dog is locked up in a kennel and looks up at the camera with sorrowful eyes, whilst a melancholic music or song play in the background? This is to raise awareness about animal shelters that try to save animals by taking them off the streets. However, what you may not know is that not all of these animals are only picked up off the road.
Animals have also been seized from caretakers that either neglect or abuse them. This means that these animals have suffered under someone’s care and must be taken away to a shelter or elsewhere so that they may receive proper care. Well, back in the 14th and 15th centuries, animals didn’t have as many rights as they have today. They were usually blamed for the crimes of others and sentenced to trials to be punished. It’s also believed that animals were tortured and throughout the sixteenth centuries. However, in the 17th century, people began to realize that torturing and maiming animals was very cruel and unusual. In Europe, people also started to feel compassion for animals and believed it to be wrong to hurt or torture them. During the 18th century, while philosophers wondered whether or not animals could feel pain, they were still tortured. Finally, in the 19th century, a law was passed that forbade this unusual practice on animals, however even then science experiments were still conducted on animals, usually with harmful and terrifying results. Consequently, in the twentieth century there are many movements against science experiments using animals as guinea pigs. Organizations like PETA ( People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals ), and ASPCA ( American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals) was formed ("Animal Rights."). They struggle to raise awareness about animal cruelty, since it is in our nature to look the other way. Imagine that you are a normal person walking down the street. Alright, now imagine that a window is left open and out of curiosity you end up looking in to see what is behind the glass. Behind this lies a dog with ribs that are easily discernible and is too exhausted or weak to do anything anymore. You would be horrified to find that there are six starving puppies that lay around the dog. You call animal control and to your relief, they find the owner and after arresting him, they carry the mistreated animals into a emergency vehicle that heads straight for the nearest animal shelter. Later as you watch the news, the same man is convicted on seven accounts of animal abuse and cruelty and is sentenced to 10 years in prison and a $4,000 fine. Not only does animal cruelty land you in places like jail, but it may even hurt your chances of getting a decent job since they would look up your criminal record and find these charges. People won’t look at you the same way since you were the one to starve a cat to death and stab a dog right after. That isn’t the only consequence you face either.
