Do you know that if you buy a pet from a pet store, there will be some animals die in the shelters? Do you also know that every year there are thousands of sheltered animals are euthanized—mercy killing— because there is no space for them? Many people buy pets rather than adopt from shelters because they think they are healthy, purebred and well-behaved. But actually the sheltered animals may be healthier, happier and much cheaper. In the recent years, more and more people decide to adopt animals since there are numerous advantages such as changing a homeless animal’s whole life, reducing illegal trade and puppy farms and benefiting from long- term advice and support.

Since the breeders sell the animals for making money, many of them don’t provide animals a cozy living environment such as inadequate food and water. Continuously buying creates demand, so the supply will never end; for example, when you buy a dog form a pet store, the empty cage will always be filled with another dog, and this vicious circle will never stop unless people stop buying.

Another reason for adopting not buying is that you can benefit from long-term advice and support. When you buy an animal form a breeder or a pet store, most of the time the advice ends when you walk out the door. Nevertheless, if you adopt or rescue an animal from a shelter, there will be a lifetime of advice, support and guidance on how to bring up and care for your pet. You can go back to them anytime and ask for any help, and they are willing to provide any assistance.

In general, adopting animals is beneficial and meaningful. You are not only saving animal’s lives but also preventing more animals from being bred in an inhumane way. Further, it makes everything easier while having so many advices and support. Please remember that there are still a lot of animals are waiting for you to bring them hope and lighten their life again. So next time when you are thinking of keeping an animal, go to an animal shelter and adopt
