Running, you are in the middle of a race, your heart is pounding and each breath is a challenge, but you know you have to keep going. Racing a three-mile race is a challenge. It pushes not only your body but your mind through extremes, you face confrontations that you may not face on a daily basis. Running and racing have existed for centuries and do not get the recognition they deserve, for the sport itself is viewed as difficult. Cross country is not about how well of a runner you nor how fast you are; that is how you get improve and get to bigger competitions, but in the end, it is about how much effort you put in and how much you are pushing yourself physically and mentally. Before you start racing, your mind will go wild with “what-if” scenarios and obscure, ridiculous possibilities. The world and all events going on around you become over thought and you begin to worry and get anxious. The anxiety of racing is a terrible feeling, then when the race begins and it becomes real, you can feel the mental push through your mind. Your thoughts go everywhere, leading to panic when you are unable to focus. At these times when focusing gives the impression that is it impossible, the feeling of doubt flushes over you, clouding your mind, making the vision of success foggy. You become scared, and even afraid that you will not to be able to motivate yourself to keep going, but you have to because being able to motivate yourself is key to help you improve your mentality while racing. Then, you finally hit the finish line, finally, at last, you can relax your mind after those though three miles. Your mind can become unflustered, and all of those thoughts of pressure and doubt fade away because you did it. Finishing the race gives your mind a sense of freedom and pride, even if you did not get the best time or placing, because if you know you tried your best and gave it your all, then you succeed and all that worry can disappear.
