In today’s education world, students and parents are held more accountable for their education costs even though the price continues to rise. Due to this fact, some students are opting out of additional education. In the year 2009, only about thirty five percent of eligible students, aged 18-24, attend some type of higher education after high school (NCHEMS Information Center, 2016). There are many reasons for this, including cost, education level of the student, and their families’ background.In order to America to maintain the status as a leader in education, these millions of students and their talents will need to be encouraged to attend college. Oftentimes, students feel ill-equipped because they may not have received the best education in high school or had the proper resources to study for the standardized tests. Since they believe they don’t have the knowledge to continue their education, they don’t even apply. If they do apply, they are looked down, in my experience, on for taking remedial courses. Remedial education should never be frowned upon, especially if the person is trying to better themselves. More options for this type of education need to be created at the college level. In a mentor/mentee relationship, the mentor will be able to encourage the high school student to attend a higher education institution and show them how to complete certain pre-responsibilities such as applying for scholarships and college application material.
