An ongoing argument has been debating if campus administrators, faculty and students should have the right to carry guns on campus. Most people say more guns on college campuses equate to more probabilities of students being injured or killed. Although gun violence is a current issue throughout the country, firearms are not necessary to bring to any college campuses because of the protection provided by the campus police, the continuous active shooter drills conducted, and the distractions concealed-carried guns create for staff and students. There is more risk for injury or death if guns are available to everyone. If guns were restricted from staff and students, and only police officials were authorized to carry guns, the possibility of unintentional harm on campuses will be reduced.
The objective for students and teachers should not be risking your life to protect other people from active shooters. Public safety on school grounds should be left to professionally qualified campus police officers, not private citizens with little or no expert training. Active shooter drills are available, and provided by college campuses. All teachers are properly trained to protect the classroom from an active shooter. The proper procedures taught to teachers are to lock the doors, turn off the lights, and cover any windows. The students are instructed to hide behind desks, and stay quiet until police or other officials show up. Active shooter drills are constantly improving. Feedback for improving active shooter drills are provided by feedback from student surveys and video surveillance.
