Driving drunk Since operating a motor vehicle after consuming alcohol is a crime, suspending someone’s driver license the first time they are convicted of this crime should be enforced in all states. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that in 2016 there were 10,497 fatalities in motor vehicle traffic crashes involving drivers with BACs of .08 g/dL or higher. Passing this law might help to decrease deaths and make motorists mindful of the consequences of driving while being under the influence of alcohol. First and most important, placing an automatic one-year suspension upon first offense, could potentially save the lives of those involved in car accidents with an intoxicated driver. Knowing that they will lose their license for a year will make everyone warier about driving drunk. Considering that not everyone takes heed of the law, having this requirement also means that at a minimum, dangerous drivers will be disabled from the roads for a year. There are those that may not agree with this opinion. Some people may believe that getting their driver license suspended for your first conviction of driving drunk is not fair because they will not be able to go to work or school. Some may argue that the cost associated with getting convicted of drinking and driving alone would suffice to not add the loss of their driver’s license for a year. Others may believe that everyone deserves a second opportunity or that losing their license on the first offense would be too harsh. Many may view this consequence to be better suited for the second
