Chronic diseases are conditions of long durations and generally slow progression such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and asthma. They are the leading causes of death, disabilities and rising health care costs in the United States and as well as in other countries of the world. However, the good news is that chronic diseases are all preventable. The World Health Organization has estimated that if major risk factors for chronic diseases were eliminated, at least, 80% of all heart disease, stroke and type-2 diabetes would be prevented and more than 40% of people with cancer would be avoided. Under the leadership of Mayor Michael Bloomberg, New York City made improving citizen health a top priority. In my opinion, I totally agree with Mayor Mike Bloomberg that common ground can be found between health promotion and chronic disease prevention.

He promoted “the Salads in School” initiative which provided low-height salad bars to elementary schools across the city’s five boroughs. In addition, he implemented changes in all areas of life for New Yorkers by proposing the ban the sale of sugary drinks in containers larger than 16 ounces in restaurants and other venues, in the move to combat obesity and encourage healthier lifestyles. He urged the U.S. department of Agriculture to exclude soda, some sport drink, and other sugary drinks from food stamp eligibility and for people to use the food stamps to buy products that are nourishing and healthier. In 2006, New York City Board of Health approved his plans to ban trans fat in cooking oil within the city’s 24,000 food establishments. Going a little further, Mayor Bloomberg introduced initiative for chain restaurants to display calorie information on menus and menu boards for customers to make healthier choices.
