Paper One: My Professional Goals
We each come from a distinct background and have had many different life experiences; sharing our professional goals on learning allows us to share where we come from with each other and what we wish to become, which in turn enables us to realize that where there are multiple experiences, there are multiple points of view, and multiple destination. At the same time, we are deeply influenced by our cultural heritage and the environment that surrounds us, which also directs our path; we need to connect ourselves with the world around us in order to understand our place in that world, to learn how and what we can offer to help others, and to learn that we are not alone. There I observed the OT evaluating adult patients and creating and implementing treatment plans. I watched OTs working with special needs children to develop and implement treatment plans; which included activities to address fine and gross motor deficits for teaching ADL skills. I learned first-hand that working with these patients can be emotionally and physically trying at times. However, observing how the OTs makes a difference in the lives of these clients gave me great inspiration, which is why I wish to study occupational therapy. I am confident that my personal, educational, and instructional background has prepared me for a University program that will provide me with the quality resources, peer companionship, and professional mentorship that will inspire me far into the future. As an education plan I would choose some occupational therapy program such as OTCAS or Alvernia
Occupational therapy is also known as the dynamic and developing healthcare profession that deals with people in ways of regaining their skills required for the every days of life. For a very long time I have always had the desire to achieve my dreams in becoming an occupational therapist. I am very well equipped with creativity, flexibility and the ability to aid people in solving their every day’s life challenges they get involved in. Occupational therapy is quite involving and needs good strategies and skills for one to be successful in the program.
Though occupation usually refers to a job, a person’s occupation is initially determined by what their everyday life consists of. When a person becomes incapable of performing the tasks that they are expected to do in their everyday life due to developmental delays, physical injury, or psychological problems they are often referred to an occupational therapist. Occupational therapy has a multifaceted nature providing endless opportunities to serve a wide range of people within many environments, which is just one of the reasons I love this occupation. My long term goals enlist the desire to maximize my knowledge and abilities to care and supplement the lives of anyone that may cross my path in this career. I have seen occupational therapy positively impact the lives of people around me, and I strive to be a bigger role on the team helping make that happen.
Occupational therapy according to Creek and Lougher, (2008) is regarded as a process due to the fact that intervention and improvement take place over time. However, due to the complexity of the process, occupational therapists and patients establish a mutual relationship in order to analyse issues and goals systematically with regards to the task demands and performance perspective.
I find occupational therapy to pique my drive to teach people valuable life skills as well as learn from those people and their experiences. Being an occupational therapist would allow me to have one-on-one interactions with patients and establish meaningful relationships over the course of time. It would also give me the dutiful privilege and responsibility of instilling confidence in others and helping them realize their full potential in self-suffiency. Occupational therapy was based off of psychology; we evolved from treating mentally ill patients with isolation as an efficient treatment plan. We must never forget we are known to be “the art and science of helping people do the day-to-day activities that are important and meaningful to their health and well being through engagement in valued occupations” (Crepeau, Cohn, & Schell, 2008). To other professional disciplines this article explains the difference between each of us, yet can also express our relation to one another. The basic goal of all therapeutic disciplines is to better our clients life, through physical, speech or occupational therapy. The realization of how important the value of occupation and health is in my own life inspires me to help others. I work on maintaining my own health by staying active and productive everyday. As I am preparing for a new chapter in my life, I have put a lot thought in about what I want out of life and what to look forward to as I get older. In order for one to achieve anything, they need to set goals to reach for. I have a handful of goals for my future, short term and long term, that I will actively work towards in my college years and beyond. In my time at UW Eau Claire, I plan to be involved and engaged in student activities on campus. Being active will help me meet new people, build a better resume, and have fun at college. What is my personal purpose? Is a question that I have never thought to ask myself until recently. Then when I started learning more about a personal purpose I started wondering if I have one and what it was. I never thought of myself has having a real purpose until a watched an interview Will Smith had did and he had said “When your life means something to someone other than yourself than you have a purpose.” That is when I realized that I have a purpose. My purpose is that I am the hug that let others know it is going to be ok. My personal goals is to be genuinely happy with myself and life and to make my parents proud, my career goal is to own my own business and being successful at doing so, finally, my educational goal is to get my bachelors degree and grauate with honors and even moving on to getting my masters. Having goals is important to me because I know that while I am in the process of accomplishing them I will have something great to look forward to in the end.
